Chapter 8 - The Queen’s Realm

A month later, the Chicago winter had officially arrived, covering the city in a blanket of clean, white snow.

The Rossi estate was quiet. The war with the Moretti family had ended abruptly after the incident at Jackson Boulevard; the Moretti elders had agreed to a full territorial retreat, leaving Dominic in complete, undisputed control of the city’s trade networks.

Inside the penthouse, Clara was sitting at the dining room table, reviewing architectural blueprints for a brand-new community health clinic near the riverfront.

Dominic walked into the room, wearing a tailored navy suit, carrying two glasses of red wine. He set one down beside her blueprints, leaning down to kiss the top of her head.

“You’ve been working on those plans for five hours,” he said softly.

“It has to be perfect,” Clara said, looking up with a radiant smile. “The Rossi Foundation is funding the entire facility. Free medical care, trauma surgery, and emergency services for anyone who walks through the door—no questions asked, no insurance required.”

Dominic smiled, pulling out a chair beside her. “No blue nylon thread allowed?”

“Only in emergencies,” she teased, tapping his chest right over his scar.

Dominic caught her hand, bringing her knuckles to his lips. “The board approved the land purchase this morning. The clinic will be named The Hayes Emergency Center.”

Clara felt a warm swell of emotion in her chest. She looked at the man beside her—the man who had once been a ruthless shadow, now using his vast fortune to rebuild the very community he had once controlled through fear.

“Thank you, Dominic,” she whispered.

“Don't thank me,” he said, looking deep into her eyes. “You changed this family, Clara. You changed me. My men don't just fear the Rossi name anymore... they respect it because of the grace you bring to this house.”

A soft knock came at the door, and Arthur stepped inside, holding a small wooden box.

“Excuse me, Boss. Mrs. Rossi,” Arthur said respectfully. “A delivery arrived from the vault team.”

Dominic took the wooden box, setting it on the table between them. He unlocked the small brass latch and lifted the lid.

Inside sat an exquisite, custom-made platinum ring. Set into the band was a rare, deep-blue sapphire, framed by micro-diamonds that caught the light like sparkling ice.

Clara gasped. “Dominic... it’s beautiful.”

“When I forced you to marry me three months ago,” Dominic said, taking the ring from the box, “we signed papers in a cold legal office. There were no flowers. There was no promise. There was only debt.”

He took her left hand, gently sliding off the plain metal band she had worn as a hostage bride.

“Clara Hayes,” Dominic said, his voice rich with emotion. “You saved my life when I was nothing. You healed my heart when I was a monster. Will you stay by my side... not as my contract wife, but as my queen?”

May you like

Tears swept over Clara’s lashes as she looked into his dark, devoted eyes.

“Yes,” she whispered, leaning forward to press her lips against his. “Yes, Dominic. Always.”
