Chapter 8 - The Table of Blood and Bread

For two weeks, the Castellani estate operated under a state of permanent, high-level defensive readiness.

The outer guards were doubled, armored tactical vehicles patrolled the perimeter fence twenty-four hours a day, and Dante’s intelligence network actively dismantled Viktor Krol’s economic assets across the Northeast, striking at his shipping lines, illegal casinos, and warehousing hubs in Providence.

Inside the mansion, however, the atmosphere had shifted into something entirely unexpected.

Elena was no longer permitted to clean floorboards or scrub linens. Despite her repeated protests, Dante had officially reassigned her position from domestic housekeeper to Personal Estate Administrator—a role that moved her out of the servant's quarters and into a sunlit three-room suite on the main residential wing.

Ivy had turned the grand living rooms of the terrifying mafia boss into her personal playground.

Her coloring books, wooden building blocks, and stuffed animals were scattered across expensive Persian rugs, while Argo—the lethal combat mastiff—followed her everywhere she went like an oversized, furry guardian angel, sleeping at the foot of her small bed every night.

It was eight o'clock on a cold Tuesday evening.

Dante sat at the head of the massive dining table in the formal hall, reviewing intelligence reports on his tablet while drinking a glass of deep red Tuscan wine.

Elena sat to his left, wearing an elegant dark green wool dress that Dante had ordered for her from a high-end boutique downtown. She was managing the estate’s private provisioning ledger, her mathematical efficiency impressing Dante’s financial team every single day.

Ivy sat on a high chair between them, happily swinging her legs while eating a plate of homemade buttered pasta that the head chef had prepared specifically to her liking.

"Krol lost his primary warehouse in New Bedford this afternoon," Dante mentioned casually, setting his tablet down on the white tablecloth. "Federal agents seized forty million dollars worth of unregistered cargo based on an anonymous tip my office provided."

Elena looked up from her ledger, a subtle smile touching her lips. "He must be furious."

"He’s bankrupt," Dante corrected her smoothly, taking a sip of his wine. "Without those shipments, he can't pay his enforcers in Providence. His own captains will turn on him within a month."

"Is it really going to end that easily?" Elena asked softly, a hint of worry returning to her eyes. "Viktor Krol is a cornered animal, Dante. Cornered animals don't calculate risks. They strike at whatever is closest."

Before Dante could answer, Ivy dropped her silver fork onto her plate with a sharp clatter.

She looked up at the tall stained-glass windows overlooking the side garden, her small face suddenly turning completely pale and serious.

Argo, who had been sleeping soundly beside the table, instantly bolted upright, his nostrils flaring, a growl so deep and terrifying ripping from his throat that the wine glasses on the table vibrated softly.

Dante stood up in a fraction of a second, his hand instantly reaching for his weapon.

"Mario!" Dante roared toward the hallway.

The glass of the high side window exploded inward in a shower of sharp, blinding shards.
