Chapter 4 - The False Husband

The words hung in the air, heavy and poisonous.
Julian.
My mind spun out of control. Julian—the quiet, reserved corporate lawyer who had courted me three years ago, who was currently away in London on a business trip, who was the father of my child.
"You're lying," I breathed, pulling Lily closer to my chest as if to protect her from his words. "Julian loves me. He took care of me when I had nothing! He’s an attorney!"
"Julian Mercer is the senior legal council for the Moretti estate," Adrian stated calmly. He unbuckled his seatbelt and pulled a thick leather folder from beneath his seat, handing it back to me. "Open it."
With hands that shook violently, I opened the folder under the soft reading light of the car cabin.
Inside were official documents, black-and-white surveillance photographs, and medical charts stamped with red confidential seals.
The first photograph showed a younger Julian Mercer standing outside a private medical clinic in Zurich alongside a man wearing a doctor's lab coat.
The second document was an experimental neuro-therapy consent form, bearing my forged signature, authorizing the use of heavy retrograde amnesiac blockers—pharmaceutical compounds designed to permanently suppress specific neural pathways associated with long-term memory.
"He didn't just give you a new name, Emma," Adrian said, his voice laced with a bitter, tragic sadness. "He used high-level experimental neurological treatments to wipe your past. Every time you had a headache, every time you asked about your childhood, he gave you 'supplements' that kept those neural pathways locked down."
I stared at the medical chart. Dates, dosages, chemical names—it was all documented. The blue pills Julian gave me every morning, telling me they were vitamins for my chronic post-concussion syndrome.
I had swallowed them dutifully every single day for three years.
"Why?" I sobbed, the reality crashing over me like a tidal wave. "Why would he do that to me?!"
"Because six years ago, before the ambush at the lake, your father was the chief financial officer for the Vale Syndicate," Adrian explained softly. "He left behind an encrypted ledger containing every offshore account, every political bribe, and every hidden asset owned by both our families. Your father gave the encryption key to you."
He reached out, his hand hovering near mine, careful not to startle me.
"Julian didn't just want to keep you away from me," Adrian said. "He was waiting for your memory to naturally recover the key. But when you got pregnant with Lily, you stopped taking those pills for nine months, didn't you?"
My heart stopped.
During my pregnancy, I had refused all medication, terrified of harming the baby. And during those nine months... I had started having the dreams.
The lake. The silver pendant. The dark-haired boy with the faint scar over his eyebrow calling my name.
"You started remembering," Adrian concluded grimly. "Julian realized the amnesia was breaking. He knew if you remembered who you were, you would come back to me. So he called in the strike team tonight to secure you and lock you away in a private clinic in Europe before I could reach you."
I buried my face in my hands, weeping uncontrollably. My entire life—my home, my memories, my marriage—was a calculated, horrifying lie.
A soft, warm hand gently touched my arm.
May you like
I looked up through my tears. Adrian was watching me, his eyes overflowing with an absolute, unwavering devotion that no lie could ever fake.
"You don't have to face this alone, Emma," he whispered. "You never had to."
