Chapter 9 - The Gathering Storm

Morning came not with golden sunlight, but with a pale, bruised light that filtered through the rain-streaked windows.
Nora awoke wrapped in the thick wool blanket, her head resting against Damon’s broad, warm chest. He was awake already, his right hand gently tracing slow, mesmerizing circles against her bare shoulder, his gray eyes looking out at the foggy city skyline outside her window.
The quiet intimacy of the morning was shattered at seven-fifteen by the sudden, sharp buzz of a mobile phone vibrating against the wooden coffee table.
Damon reached out, grabbing his phone before it could ring a second time. He held it to his ear, his posture shifting instantly back into the rigid, alert line of a king on high alert.
"Speak," Damon said softly, his arm keeping Nora pressed snugly against his side.
Silas’s voice came through the receiver, sharp, frantic, and loud enough that Nora could hear every word.
"Damon, we have a massive situation," Silas reported, his voice tight with alarm. "Julian Vance’s father—Dominic Vance—just landed in Blackwood with twenty men from Philadelphia. He brought Victor Whitmore and two members of the Commission with him."
Damon’s gray eyes narrowed into cold steel slits. "On what grounds?"
"Julian told his father that you're losing your mind," Silas said grimly. "He claims you assaulted him, pulled twenty percent from their dock rights, and rejected the Whitmore alliance because you're being compromised by a local girl. Dominic has called an emergency Commission hearing at your estate at noon today to question your leadership and demand a forfeiture of the North Docks."
Damon didn't flinch. His grip on the phone remained steady, his voice dropping into an icy, terrifying calm. "A Commission hearing in my own house?"
"They have the votes, Damon," Silas warned, his tone heavy with desperation. "If you don't show up with a united front—if you show up looking like a rogue boss who's abandoning his duties for a maid—they will vote to stripe your territory. You need to fix the Whitmore deal before noon, or we are going to war with Philadelphia by sunset."
Damon looked down at Nora. She was sitting up, wrapping the blanket around her chest, her hazel eyes wide with sudden, sickening dread as she heard Silas’s words.
They will vote to stripe your territory... a rogue boss abandoning his duties for a maid.
"I will be at the estate at eleven," Damon said cold-eyely to Silas. "Have my legal team ready. And tell Dominic Vance that if he brings twenty armed men onto my driveway, only ten of them will walk off it."
He hung up the phone and set it on the table.
"Damon..." Nora whispered, her voice trembling as she sat up beside him. "This is what Silas warned us about. They're going to use me to take your family's land."
Damon stood up from the sofa, pulling his dry wool coat back over his broad shoulders. He knelt down in front of her, taking both of her warm hands in his raw, bandaged fingers, holding them tight against his chest.
"Listen to me very carefully, Nora," Damon said, his pale gray eyes burning with an intense, fierce fire that made her heart stop. "No one takes my land. No one dictates who I love. And no one—not Dominic Vance, not the Whitmores, and not the Commission—uses you to threaten my house."
"What are you going to do?" she asked, tears pricking the corners of her eyes.
Damon stood up, pulling his black wool coat around his shoulders, his jaw set in a line of absolute, lethal determination.
"I am going to finish the meeting I started two weeks ago," Damon said coldly. "Put on your best coat, Nora. You're coming with me to the estate."
May you like
Nora blinked in absolute shock. "To the estate? Damon, they want to destroy you because of me! If I walk into that room—"
"If you walk into that room by my side," Damon interrupted softly, reaching out to cup her cheek with his large hand, "they will understand that you aren't my weakness, Nora. You're my queen. And a king doesn't negotiate his crown with men who are afraid of his reign."
