Chapter 4 - THE INTERROGATION AT THE DOCKS

Back in Chicago, the storm raged with unbridled fury across Lake Shore Drive, but inside the subterranean holding facilities of the Vale shipping yards, the air was dead silent, cold, and smelled of rust and river water.

A single overhead bulb flickered above a heavy steel table bolted to the concrete floor.

Isabella Rossi sat on a metal chair, her hands cuffed behind her back. Her emerald silk gown was wrinkled and stained, her pristine hair falling in disheveled strands around her face.

The heavy steel door swung open with a screech of iron.

Marcus Vale stepped into the room.

He had removed his tie and unbuttoned his collar, but he still wore the crisp white shirt from the party. His eyes were bloodshot, surrounded by dark circles, his skin pale and hardened into a mask of pure, murderous vengeance.

Beside him walked his chief of security, carrying a black leather briefcase containing three encrypted laptops and two hard drives confiscated from Isabella’s private office at the mansion.

Marcus did not sit down. He stood at the head of the table, looking down at Isabella as if she were a insect under a microscope.

"Marcus," Isabella said, her voice shaking despite her desperate attempt to sound confident. "You've kept me here for six hours without a lawyer. This is unhinged. I have served your family for ten years!"

Marcus set the white folder containing my paternity papers and medical records down on the table between them.

"Ten years," Marcus said softly. His voice held no anger—only a vast, terrifying void. "And in ten years, you forgot who built this empire, and who it was built for."

"I built it for you!" Isabella snapped, leaning forward against her cuffs. "I managed your territory! I kept the federal prosecutors off your back! I neutralized rival threats before they reached your desk! What did Elena ever do for you? She painted canvas! She threw flower arrangements! She was a weak, fragile burden who didn't belong in our world!"

SLAM!

Marcus’s hand slammed down onto the steel table with enough force to dent the metal, the sound echoing through the concrete bunker like a gunshot!

Isabella flinched back, her heart hammering against her ribs as Marcus leaned over the table, bringing his cold, terrifying face inches from hers.

"Elena is my wife," Marcus whispered, his dark eyes burning with a lethal fire. "Elena is the only reason I am still a human being. She was the one thing in this disgusting, bloody world that was clean, pure, and mine. And you took her from me."

"I was protecting your focus!" she cried out.

"You were building a empire of your own," Marcus corrected coldly. He gestured to his security chief, who opened the briefcase and slid a stack of printed financial ledgers across the table.

Isabella’s eyes widened in genuine horror as she looked at the bank accounts, offshore shell companies, and wire transfers documented on the pages.

"Did you really think I wouldn't check your personal ledgers once I knew you were lying to me, Isabella?" Marcus asked softly. "You weren't just blocking my wife's calls because she was a 'distraction.' You were blocking her because you were funneling three million dollars from our real estate acquisition accounts into a private holding fund in the Cayman Islands—and Elena’s legal name was on the board review requests."

Isabella swallowed hard, her mouth suddenly completely dry. "Marcus... I can explain..."

"Elena noticed the accounting discrepancy eight months ago," Marcus revealed, his voice dripping with agonizing realization. "She tried to tell me. She sent me messages asking me to look at the real estate audits. She tried to visit my office to hand me the files personally. But every single time she reached out... you blocked her. You made her think I was ignoring her personal cries for love, when in reality, you were using my emotional distance to cover up your theft!"

Tears of fear finally spilled down Isabella’s cheeks. The grand illusion of her intellectual superiority had completely shattered.

"She thought I didn't care about her..." Marcus whispered, his voice cracking with a sudden, devastating wave of guilt. "She thought I didn't care that she was pregnant... because you made sure I never saw her face."

Marcus straightened up, turning his back on her as he walked toward the heavy steel door.

"What are you going to do to me?" Isabella sobbed frantically, pulling against her handcuffs. "Marcus, please! We worked together for ten years! Don't do this!"

Marcus stopped at the door, his hand resting on the iron handle. He didn't look back at her.

"You stole six years of my wife's peace," Marcus said, his tone devoid of all human mercy. "You stole the moment I should have held my child's mother in my arms on Christmas Eve. You are going to sign over every asset, every shell company, and every dollar you stole back into Elena's personal trust."

"And then?" she wept.

"And then you are going to be stripped of your name, your reputation, and your freedom," Marcus replied coldly. "You will spend the rest of your life in a maximum-security federal facility for financial fraud and conspiracy. My lawyers will make sure you never see the light of day again."

"Marcus! Please!" she screamed.

Marcus stepped out of the room, and the heavy steel door slammed shut behind him, sealing Isabella Rossi in the dark forever.

Outside the bunker, the cold winter wind whipped off the Chicago River. Marcus stood near his dark sedan, pulled out his phone, and opened a file that his security chief had just recovered from the encrypted server.

It was a voice message left by Elena eight months ago—a message that had been quarantined by Isabella and never played.

Marcus pressed his thumb against the screen, holding the phone up to his ear with trembling fingers.

Elena’s soft, familiar voice filled his ear, sounding slightly nervous but filled with affection:

"Hi Marcus... I know you're in the middle of the North Chicago negotiations right now, and I know how stressed you are. I just... I made your favorite pasta tonight, and I saved a plate for you in the fridge. You don't have to call back. Just... please come home tonight if you can. I miss you. I love you."

May you like

Marcus lowered the phone slowly.

Standing alone on the frozen docks of Chicago, the most powerful man in the city bowed his head into his hands and wept openly in the dark.
