Chapter 7 - The Autumn Council

The grand pavilion at the Ventresca country estate was filled with sixty senior family members, regional captains, and foreign logistics partners by late October. The air was crisp, carrying the scent of burning pine logs from the massive outdoor hearths.

Genevieve sat beside Bastion at the central table. She wore a tailored dark emerald dress, her hair pinned up with simple silver clips, looking every bit the composed, aristocratic wife the family had expected her to be. But beneath her calm exterior, she was monitoring every movement in the room. In her small evening clutch, beside her lipstick, lay a compact digital blood pressure monitor and three emergency doses of sublingual medication.

Valyria stood near Orazio’s wheelchair at the head of the raised dais. She wore a striking white suit, holding a leather-bound ledger that contained the family’s annual port distribution reports.

"Before we review the shipping yields for the third quarter," Valyria announced, her voice echoing clearly across the pavilion, "there is a matter of governance that must be addressed under Article Four of the family charter."

The ambient noise in the pavilion died down immediately. Captains paused with their wine glasses halfway to their lips.

"Article Four dictates that any line leader holding primary territorial titles must demonstrate long-term stability and clear succession plans," Valyria continued, her eyes locking onto Bastion. "My brother has managed the northern routes admirably. But his health remains fragile, and as we all know, his branch of the family cannot offer a second generation to secure the land titles."

Orazio raised a hand, stopping his daughter momentarily. "Bastion," the old man said, his voice gravelly and weak. "You have refused Dr. Laramere’s visits for two months. Valyria’s concerns are not unfounded. The family needs to know who will hold the northern docks when you step down."

Bastion stood up calmly, buttoning his suit jacket with fluid, unhurried grace. The fatigue that had haunted him weeks ago was gone; his skin was healthy, his eyes sharp, his posture commanding.

"My health has never been better," Bastion said, his voice carrying effortlessly across the stone floor. "Dr. Laramere was relieved of his duties because his medical practices were found to be grossly deficient—and actively harmful."

Valyria sneered. "Deficient? Dr. Laramere was recommended by our primary Swiss clinic! You are simply hiding your decline, Bastion. You cannot produce an heir, and without an heir, your territorial rights revert to the central council at the end of this calendar year."

"Dr. Laramere was administering synthetic progestins designed to induce temporary sterility," Genevieve said, standing up beside her husband.

The room stirred with low whispers. Valyria’s expression flickered, a sudden shadow of panic passing across her featureless mask before she recovered.

"That is an absurd accusation from a pharmacist who has been in this family for less than three months!" Valyria snapped.

"It is a chemical fact supported by mass spectrometry reports from the state medical board laboratory," Genevieve replied, taking a small blue envelope from her bag and placing it on the table before the nearest senior captain. "Along with financial records showing monthly transfers of fifty thousand dollars from a Swiss holding company controlled by Valyria Ventresca into Dr. Laramere’s personal off-shore account."

The silence in the room became absolute.

Orazio slowly turned his head to look at his daughter, his eyes narrowing into cold, furious slits. "Valyria?"

"She's lying!" Valyria shouted, her composure shattering completely. "She falsified those documents to protect her husband's position!"

"The laboratory reports are notarized by the chief medical examiner of the district," Genevieve said smoothly, looking Valyria dead in the eye. "And if you doubt my methodology, Dr. Laramere is currently being detained at the state border by federal health inspectors regarding illegal compounding activities. He has already submitted a written statement to avoid federal prosecution."

Bastion stepped forward, resting his hands on the table. "The northern routes remain under my control. The succession remains in my home. Anyone who wishes to challenge my physical capability is welcome to step onto the mat with me after dinner."

No one moved. No one spoke.

Orazio slowly leaned back in his chair, taking a deep, rattling breath. "Valyria," the old man whispered. "Leave the pavilion."
