Chapter 10 - The Unbroken House

That night, Vale House was quiet.
A soft rain was falling outside, drumming a gentle, rhythmic lullaby against the leaded windows of the grand estate.
In the second-floor sanctuary, a warm fire crackled in the massive brick fireplace.
Nora sat in the deep leather armchair, holding small baby Daisy against her shoulder, rocking her gently to sleep. The room was soft, filled with the warm scent of dark coffee and crackling cedar wood.
Above the mantle, illuminated by the soft spotlight, sat the cheap oak frame containing the charcoal sketch of 1412 South Water Street.
Beside it, now framed in a matching, simple oak border, hung a second charcoal drawing.
It had been drawn by Nora during the long summer afternoons in the courtyard. It showed Vale House—not as an imposing, terrifying fortress of power, but as a warm, sunlit home, with flowers blooming in the courtyard, a baby stroller sitting on the terrace, and two figures standing hand-in-hand by the front doors.
Adrian walked silently into the room, wearing a soft gray sweater and dark trousers. He had just finished locking the estate for the night—not out of paranoia, but out of routine habit.
He stepped quietly over to the armchair, kneeling beside Nora and his sleeping daughter.
He reached out, his long, warm finger gently touching Daisy’s soft, tiny cheek. The baby made a small, sweet sigh in her sleep, cuddling closer against Nora’s chest.
Adrian looked up at Nora, his dark eyes filled with a peace he had sought for thirty-seven years.
“She’s fast asleep,” Nora whispered, a soft, loving smile on her face.
“She knows she’s safe,” Adrian replied softly. He leaned up, pressing a long, warm kiss against Nora’s lips—a kiss filled with reverence, gratitude, and an eternal, unyielding love.

He stood up, sitting on the edge of the wide armchair beside her, wrapping his long arms around them both, pulling his wife and child close against his heart.
Outside, the rain continued to fall over Philadelphia, washing the old streets clean, while inside the walls of Vale House, the quiet flame of a true home burned bright, unbroken, and forever secure.
