Chapter 7 - The Confrontation in the Hallway

Willa did not hesitate.

She knew that if she were caught eavesdropping outside Kendrick’s private vault room at two in the morning, even Kendrick’s protection would not save her from Barrett’s instant execution order.

Instead of running back toward the west wing—which would look like an admission of guilt—she acted on sheer maternal panic. She quickly bent down, scooped Penny up into her arms, and backed away from the door, making sure her posture was exposed and vulnerable in the center of the lit corridor.

The heavy double doors swept open with violent force.

Kendrick stepped out into the hallway, a heavy black semi-automatic pistol held at his side, his face contorted in a mask of lethal fury. Right behind him stood Barrett, his hand resting inside his coat holster, his eyes gleam with a hungry, predatory light.

The gun lifted three inches before Kendrick saw who was standing in the hall.

Willa stood under the dim overhead lamp, dressed in her white linen nightgown, holding the small girl tightly against her chest. Her dark hair fell loosely over her shoulders, her eyes wide with terror, her bare feet shivering against the cold stone floor.

Titan stood right beside her, resting his broad head against her hip.

Kendrick froze. He slowly lowered the weapon, his dark brow furrowing in confusion.

"Willa?" Kendrick asked, his voice rough and laced with shock. "What are you doing in this wing?"

"She was spying!" Barrett roared, pulling his own gun from his jacket and stepping past Kendrick. "I told you! She was listening at the door!"

Titan instantly lunged forward, a deafening, terrifying bark echoing through the corridor as he blocked Barrett’s path, his jaws snapping inches from Barrett’s hands.

Barrett stumbled back with a curse, raising his gun toward the dog.

"Put the gun down, Barrett!" Kendrick roared, grabbing Barrett’s wrist with a crushing grip and twisting it until the older man cried out in pain, forcing him to lower the weapon. "Put it down!"

Kendrick shoved Barrett back into the office threshold, then turned his focus entirely to Willa. He stepped forward, his eyes scanning her face, then looking down at Penny, who had buried her face deep into the crook of Willa’s neck.

"Willa," Kendrick said, his tone softening slightly, though his eyes remained sharp as daggers. "Answer me. Why are you out of your room?"

Willa swallowed hard, forcing tears of genuine fear into her eyes, letting her voice tremble convincingly.

"It... it was Penny," Willa stammered, her voice shaking as she clutched the child tighter. "I heard bare feet in the hallway. I came out and saw her walking toward the stairs. She was sleepwalking, Mr. Ashford. She wouldn't answer me when I called her name."

Kendrick looked down at his daughter. "Sleepwalking?"

"She was heading toward the stairs," Willa lied smoothly, mixing truth with fiction to create an undeniable story. "I followed her down to make sure she didn't fall. She walked straight into this hallway. I was trying to pick her up to carry her back when... when I heard shouting inside."

Kendrick looked at Penny’s limp, tired body in Willa’s arms, then looked down at Titan, who was calmly licking the child’s bare toes.

Penny had sleptwalked before—it was a documented symptom of her trauma that had occurred frequently during the first year after her mother's death.

Kendrick turned his head and shot a lethal glance at Barrett, who was leaning against the office doorframe, massaging his bruised wrist.

"Sleepwalking," Kendrick repeated coldly. "Is this your dangerous spy, Barrett? A girl in a nightgown trying to keep my daughter from breaking her neck on the stairs?"

"It’s a cover!" Barrett insisted, his face red with frustration. "She’s clever, Kendrick! She used the child as a shield because she knew you wouldn't shoot!"

Kendrick walked up to Barrett, standing so close their noses almost touched.

"If I ever see you point a firearm at this girl or my daughter again, Barrett," Kendrick whispered, his voice dropping into a chilling register that made the hair on the back of Willa’s neck stand up, "I will not call a council meeting. I will put a bullet through your eye and throw your body into the Hudson River. Do you understand me?"

Barrett stared at Kendrick, his teeth grinding together in helpless rage. He knew he had pushed too far. He swallowed his pride, giving a single, bitter nod.

"Understood, Boss," Barrett muttered.

"Get out of my house," Kendrick ordered. "Go back to the city. We will hold the council meeting at three tomorrow."

Barrett pulled his coat tight around his shoulders, shot one final, murderous glance at Willa, and walked briskly down the corridor toward the private rear exit.

The heavy outer door slammed shut, leaving only Kendrick, Willa, Penny, and the dog in the quiet hallway.

Kendrick turned back to Willa. He stepped close, reaching out with his long, warm hand to gently adjust the blanket wrapped around Penny’s shoulders. His fingers accidentally brushed against Willa’s collarbone, sending a sharp, electric shock through her skin.

Willa held her breath, her eyes locking with his.

"I’m sorry," Kendrick said quietly, his voice carrying a rare, sincere vulnerability. "Barrett is paranoid. He sees ghosts behind every corner."

"He doesn't trust me," Willa murmured.

"He doesn't trust anyone," Kendrick corrected. He looked into her dark eyes, searching them for a long moment. "Are you alright?"

"I was frightened," she admitted truthfully. "Not for myself... for Penny."

Kendrick looked down at his sleeping daughter, then back at Willa. A soft, unreadable expression passed over his harsh features—a mixture of gratitude, respect, and something far more dangerous that looked like growing affection.

"You brought her back to me, Willa," Kendrick said softly. "Twice now."

He reached out, his calloused thumb gently wiping away the single dry tear trace on her cheek. The touch was so gentle, so entirely unexpected from a man who ruled an underworld empire, that Willa felt her heart give a violent, dangerous thud against her ribs.

"Go back to bed, Willa," Kendrick murmured, stepping back to give her room. "I’ll have two extra guards posted outside your door tonight. No one will bother you again."

"Thank you, Mr. Ashford," Willa whispered.

She turned and carried the child back toward the safety of the west wing, feeling Kendrick’s intense, burning gaze following her every step through the dark.

She had survived the night. She had protected her cover.

But as she lay back down in her canopy bed, holding the sleeping child close to her heart, Willa realized she was drowning in a sea of impossible contradictions.

May you like

She was falling in love with the daughter of her enemy.

And worse... when Kendrick Ashford had touched her cheek, she had wanted him to hold her close and never let go.
