Chapter 5 - Shadows on the Waterfront

Two weeks passed, bringing the damp, biting chill of early December to the coast.
Halloway House had settled into a quiet, peaceful routine, but outside the stone walls of the estate, the fallout from Celeste Ashford’s departure was sending shockwaves through Boston’s financial and legal elite.
At six o'clock on a cold Thursday evening, August stood in the glass-walled office of Halloway Shipping Terminals at the edge of the Boston harbor. Down below, massive container ships were being unloaded under the glare of industrial floodlights, giant yellow cranes moving back and forth against the dark sky like prehistoric metal beasts.
The office door opened, and Daniel Vance, August’s chief of security and private investigator, walked in. Vance was a stocky man with a broken nose and sharp, watchful eyes. He laid a thick envelope on August’s desk.
"The Ashford family is spiraling, boss," Vance said, taking a seat. "Julian’s license is gone. Two of their firm’s biggest corporate clients pulled their retainers this morning after the story hit the Legal Intelligencer. Old man Ashford is desperate."
August didn't look up from his computer screen. "Desperate people make mistakes, Daniel."
"They do," Vance agreed grimly. "And Celeste is leading the charge. She’s been spending time at the harbor club in South Boston, meeting with Marcus Kane."
August’s fingers paused on the keyboard.
Marcus Kane was a mid-level dock operator with ties to the organized crime syndicates that managed illicit cargo through the secondary Atlantic piers. He was a ruthless, ambitious man who had been trying to expand his territory into Halloway-controlled docks for five years, only to be systematically crushed by August at every turn.
"What does Celeste want with Kane?" August asked, his voice chilling instantly.
"She wants leverage," Vance said. "She knows she can't touch you directly—you've got too much armor. But she’s been asking questions about the house. About the staff. Specifically about Meredith Vale."
August slowly stood up from his chair. The broad shoulders that carried the weight of a maritime empire seemed to double in presence under the harsh office lights.
"She’s looking for a weak point," August said softly.
"She thinks the nurse is your weak point," Vance corrected. "Kane’s boys were spotted watching the south gate of the Greenwich estate yesterday afternoon. They took photos of Meredith walking in the garden with your father."
A stillness settled over the office—a heavy, suffocating silence that made Vance instinctively pull his shoulders back.
"Where is Kane right now?" August asked.
"He’s at his warehouse near Pier 42," Vance replied. "He thinks he’s negotiating a deal with Celeste’s father to sell information regarding your private shipping manifests."

August reached into his desk drawer, pulled out a pair of black leather gloves, and pulled them over his long fingers, snapping the leather tight at his wrists.
"Call the dock crew," August said, his tone flat and terrifyingly quiet. "We are going to have a conversation with Mr. Kane about the rules of engagement in this city."
