Chapter 9 - The Reckoning at Villa Moretti

By 6:00 PM, the rain had returned to Villa Moretti, washing over the limestone facade in heavy, rhythmic sheets.

In the grand ballroom, the lights were dimmed.

Bianca Vitali sat in a chair in the center of the room, flanked by two of Dante’s armed guards. Her red dress was crumpled; her hair was a mess; her eyes were red-rimmed from hours of weeping and frantic denials.

Dante sat across from her in a dark leather armchair, holding a file folder that Marco had just handed him.

The heavy double doors of the ballroom opened.

The sound of footsteps echoed across the marble floor—slow, measured, and confident.

Bianca turned her head, gasping as her eyes locked onto the woman entering the room.

Elena walked in.

She wore her forest-green silk dress, her cream coat draped over her shoulders like a cape. She moved with quiet majesty, her dark eyes fixed entirely on Bianca. Behind her walked Julian Vance, looking utterly defeated, carrying a signed confession under the supervision of Marco Bellini.

"You..." Bianca shrieked, trying to jump from her chair, but a guard firmly placed a hand on her shoulder, forcing her back down. "You witch! You ruined everything!"

Elena stopped six feet from Bianca’s chair. She looked down at her—not with hatred, not with anger, but with a cool, detached pity that burned Bianca worse than any insult.

"I didn't ruin you, Bianca," Elena said, her voice echoing clearly off the high ceilings. "You ruined yourself the moment you believed money made you untouchable."

Dante stood up from his chair. He didn't look at Bianca. His eyes were entirely on Elena.

He took in the change in her—the glowing skin, the flowing dark hair, the absolute, unshakeable power radiating from her posture. He realized that the quiet, hyper-competent maid who had managed his house for four years had always possessed this strength; she had simply been waiting for a reason to unleash it.

"Elena," Dante said, his voice deep, rich, and filled with a profound respect.

"Mr. Moretti," Elena acknowledged, turning her gaze to him.

Dante held up Vance’s signed confession and the bank ledgers Elena had provided. "Everything is here. The federal authorities have already been notified. Bianca and Vance will be taken into custody within the hour."

Bianca began to scream, cursing both of them as the guards unceremoniously lifted her from the chair and led her toward the rear service exit where federal agents were waiting. Her shrieks faded down the long corridor until the double doors swung shut, leaving only the quiet patter of rain against the high windows.

Silence descended upon the grand ballroom.

Dante walked slowly across the floor until he stood directly in front of Elena. He was a man accustomed to commanding rooms, to making hardened criminals tremble with a glance, yet standing before Elena Rossi, he felt a strange, humbling hesitation.

"You swam out," Dante said softly, looking into her dark eyes.

"I had things left to do," Elena replied quietly.

"You saved yourself," Dante said. "I looked for you in the lake. I was ready to kill everyone responsible if I found you dead."

Elena looked at him, seeing the genuine, raw emotion buried beneath his slate-gray eyes. "I know, Dante. I saw you from the woods."

Dante reached out, his long fingers hesitating before gently touching the dark, soft curls tumbling over her shoulder. "You will never wear an apron in this house again, Elena. You will never take orders from anyone."

"I never intended to," Elena said, her chin lifting with quiet pride.

Dante smiled—a real, genuine smile that transformed his sharp, intimidating face into something strikingly handsome.

"Villa Moretti needs a manager," Dante murmured, stepping closer, his voice dropping into a intimate register. "Not a housemaid. Someone who knows every secret, every corner, every strength, and every weakness of this place. Someone who commands respect without uttering a shout."

"And what does that position pay?" Elena asked, a small, knowing smirk touching her crimson lips.

"Whatever you demand," Dante replied softly. "Including my complete, undivided loyalty."
