Chapter 6 - THE FIRST BLOOD

The storm of violence arrived three weeks later, not with a bang, but with a silent infiltration.

It was two o'clock on a moonless Thursday morning. The fog was thick enough to coat the glass windows of Blackwood Manor in heavy condensation.

In the second-floor guest suite, Genevieve woke up instantly.

She didn't wake up to a sound. She woke up to the feeling of Bruno’s body shifting beside her bed. The Doberman was standing erect, his ears pointed toward the heavy oak door leading to the hallway.

Genevieve reached under her pillow, her fingers wrapping around the grip of a small 9mm Glock Adrian had given her two weeks ago.

Click.

The door handle rotated silently.

Genevieve slipped out of bed, pressing her back against the wall beside the wardrobe. She signaled to Bruno with two quick finger taps against her thigh—the old Saint-Claire command for Ambush.

The oak door creaked open six inches.

A tall man wearing tactical gear, a night-vision visor, and a suppressed submachine gun slid into the room. He didn't look toward the wall; his barrel was pointed directly toward the empty shape under the bed blankets.

"Now, Nero!" Genevieve whispered in sharp French.

The ninety-eight-pound beast launched himself through the dark like a cannonball.

Bruno hit the intruder’s chest with full force, his jaws locking around the man's right shoulder with a sickening crunch of breaking bone and tearing Kevlar. The tactical submachine gun clattered uselessly to the floor.

The intruder let out a muffled scream of agony, dropping to his knees under the weight of the dog.

Before the second intruder behind him could step through the doorway, a loud THUD echoed down the hall, followed by the heavy sound of a body hitting the floorboards.

Adrian stepped into the doorway, holding a silenced pistol in his right hand. A second hitman lay dead behind him in the corridor, a single bullet hole centered neatly between his eyes.

"Are you hurt?" Adrian asked, his dark eyes instantly scanning Genevieve from head to toe.

"I'm fine," she said, lowering her gun. "Nero took the first one."

Adrian walked up to the intruder writhing on the floor under Bruno’s jaw. He pulled off the man's tactical mask, revealing a harsh, scarred face with a distinctive black viper tattoo running up his neck.

"Valenti hit squad," Adrian noted coldly. "The third division out of Brooklyn."

Vance rushed into the room seconds later, flanked by four armed guards. "Boss! We caught two more near the gatehouse! They bypassed the eastern sensor line!"

"They had internal help," Adrian said, his voice turning into a terrifying, icy whisper that filled the room. "The eastern sensors can only be disabled from the internal control panel in the main study."

Genevieve looked at Adrian, her eyes widening. "An insider."

Adrian didn't look surprised. He stood up, wiping a speck of blood from his cuff. "Vance, lock down the manor. Nobody enters, nobody leaves. Secure the perimeter with the primary team."

"And the traitor, boss?" Vance asked.

Adrian turned his head toward the end of the second-floor wing, where Julian’s private suite was located.

"Bring my brother to the library," Adrian commanded.
