Chapter 10 - THE CANVAS BAG

That evening, after the children had gone to sleep in the newly renovated residential wings, the estate grew quiet and peaceful beneath a wide sky filled with stars.
Dominic and Mara sat together on the stone bench overlooking the gardens, sharing a bottle of white wine.
The cool evening breeze carried the sweet scent of night-blooming jasmine across the terrace.
Near Mara’s feet sat her old, battered canvas bag—clean, mended, but still carrying the faded marks of its long journey.
Dominic looked down at the bag, then reached over to gently rest his hand on Mara’s knee.
“You still keep it?” Dominic asked softly.
Mara looked down at the canvas bag, a reflective, quiet smile touching her lips.
“I keep it to remind myself where we came from,” Mara said, reaching down to pull out the small, battered teddy bear—Barnaby—that had once belonged to Daniel. “When you spent your life watching people hide their worst instincts behind expensive suits and marble walls, you learn that the only things that truly matter are the small things you carry with you when everything else falls apart.”
Dominic reached out, his fingers brushing against hers as he took the teddy bear, setting it gently on the stone bench between them.
He leaned in close, his gray eyes locked onto hers with a deep, unwavering devotion that had grown stronger with every passing day.
“You brought more than photos and papers into this house, Mara,” Dominic whispered, his hand rising to gently cup her cheek, his thumb tracing the soft line of her jaw. “You brought my brother back. You brought my mother’s memory back. And you brought me back from the dark.”
Mara turned her face slightly, pressing a soft kiss against the palm of his hand, her eyes shining in the moonlight.
“You were never lost, Dominic,” she murmured softly. “You were just waiting for someone to open the door.”
Dominic leaned down, pressing his lips against hers in a quiet, deep, and tender kiss that sealed every promise, every shared scar, and every new beginning they had built together.

Around them, the great stone house stood tall, bright, and silent—no longer a fortress of fear, but a home filled with light, life, and love.
And on the stone bench beneath the stars, the old canvas bag sat open, completely empty of secrets, because everything inside it had finally found its proper place in the world.
