Chapter 10 - The New Rules

Six months later.
Spring had arrived in Chicago. The eighteen acres of the Carver estate were alive with blooming cherry blossoms, lush green lawns, and the sweet warmth of May sunshine.
The iron gates at the perimeter wall remained, but the oppressive, fortress-like energy of the estate had vanished entirely.
In the formal gardens behind the main mansion, a grand white pavilion had been erected. Hundreds of white roses lined the aisle leading to an altar overlooking the private lake.
Sitting in the front rows were three hundred guests—including a fully recovered Dr. Evans, Chef Danny wearing a pristine white chef's hat, and Marcus Dane, who was proudly wearing a new suit and a bright boutonnière.
The Moretti family was gone—their empire completely dismantled, their assets absorbed into the Carver syndicate, and Victor serving a thirty-year sentence in federal prison.
The organ music swelled, filling the clear spring air with magnificent harmony.
Standing at the altar in a flawless black tuxedo was Vincent Carver. He looked regal, powerful, and deeply calm, his grey eyes fixed entirely on the back of the aisle.
The double doors opened.
Walking down the aisle, wearing a fairy-like pink dress with flower petals in her hair, was eight-year-old Lily. She carried a basket of rose petals, proudly dropping them on the carpet, her small face glowing with pure happiness. Her diabetes was fully managed, her skin rosy and healthy, her laughter a daily joy in the grand house.
And behind her came Emma.
She took Vincent’s breath away.
She wore a gown of pure white lace that trailed behind her like a cloud, her soft hair adorned with delicate white flowers. She walked with effortless grace, her brown eyes shining with profound, unconditional love as she looked at the man waiting for her at the altar.
When her hand touched Vincent’s, a spark of pure electricity passed between them.
The priest spoke traditional words of love, honor, and protection, but when it came time for the vows, Vincent looked directly into Emma’s eyes, holding both her small hands in his.
"Emma," Vincent spoke softly, his deep voice carrying across the quiet garden. "I spent my whole life building walls because I believed the world was a dangerous place where trust didn't exist. I searched your bag six months ago expecting to find a thief. Instead, I found the bravest woman I have ever known."
He gently brushed his thumb across her cheek, wiping away a tear of happiness.
"You taught me that strength isn't about power or fear," Vincent continued. "It's about love. You and Lily gave me a home where I only had a house. I promise to protect you, honor you, and love you for every remaining day of my life."
Emma smiled through her tears, her voice steady and beautiful as she answered. "Vincent, you stepped into our darkness and brought us light. You gave my daughter a father and gave me a partner who stands beside me no matter what. You changed every rule in your house, and in doing so, you changed my entire world. I am yours, completely and forever."
"By the power vested in me, I now pronounce you husband and wife," the priest declared with a broad smile. "You may kiss the bride."
Vincent pulled Emma gently into his arms, dipping her slightly as he pressed his lips to hers in a deep, passionate kiss that drew thunderous applause from every guest in attendance.
Lily rushed forward, throwing her arms around both of their legs, giggling happily. Vincent laughed, picking up both his wife and his daughter into his arms, holding them tight against his heart under the warm afternoon sun.

The old rules of the Carver estate were dead and gone.
There were no more cold tests, no more suspicion, and no more fear in the dark. In their place stood a family built on iron loyalty, fierce protection, and an everlasting love that had started with a faded canvas bag on a cold service floor.
