Chapter 7 - The Confrontation

The small living room was lit only by the warm amber glow of a single streetlamp filtering through the rain-streaked window.

Vincent sat on the edge of the small fabric sofa, his long legs stretched out, his tuxedo jacket removed and draped over the chair back. He looked completely out of place in the modest apartment, yet he refused to leave.

Claire stood by the kitchen counter, holding two cups of hot chamomile tea. She walked over, setting one cup on the small coffee table in front of him, and sat down in the armchair across from him.

"You knew," Vincent said flatly. His voice was quiet, but it held a dark, underlying tremor that vibrated through the room.

Claire took a slow sip of her tea, keeping her posture rigid. "I found out six days before the gala in New York."

Vincent’s silver eyes locked onto hers with devastating intensity. "You were pregnant when I told those reporters you meant nothing to me."

"Yes," Claire said, looking directly into his eyes without flinching. "I had spent six days rehearsing how to tell you after the party. I was terrified, Vincent. I didn't know how a man who lived in the shadows of the shipping world would react to a baby."

Vincent leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees, pressing his palms against his face. A heavy, agonizing groan escaped his chest.

"And then you heard me say those words," Vincent whispered into his hands.

"I didn't just hear them, Vincent," Claire said, her voice dropping into a painful, quiet cadence. "I felt them. You looked right into my eyes, you saw my hand on my stomach, and you erased me. You threw me away to protect your reputation."

"I was protecting your life, Claire!" Vincent snapped, pulling his hands away from his face, his silver eyes blazing with a mixture of agony and rage. "I told you what happened that night! My house was wired! Three hit squads were looking for anyone connected to me! If I had held your hand, if I had smiled at you, they would have taken you! They would have tortured you to get to my distribution network!"

"And what about after?" Claire demanded, standing up from her chair, her eyes shining with hot tears. "What about the six months after that? What about the three years after that? You could have sent a message! You could have cleared a safe path! But you left me in the dark, Vincent! You let me believe for five years that I was just a temporary distraction to a powerful crime boss!"

Vincent stood up, towering over her, his chest heaving with heavy, silent gasps.

"I searched for you, Claire!" Vincent roared softly, keeping his voice down so as not to wake Leo. "I sent teams to every city! But you vanished like a ghost! You changed your name on corporate registries! You used Delaware trusts! You buried yourself so deep even my intelligence network couldn't find you until six months ago!"

Claire froze. "Six months ago?"

Vincent’s jaw tightened. "Yes. My investigators located your shop in Ballard six months ago. They brought me your tax filings, your lease agreement, and... pediatric medical records."

Claire felt her knees go weak. "You knew about Leo for six months?"

"I didn't know he was mine until I saw his medical birth record," Vincent whispered, his voice cracking violently. "You named him Leo Vincent Bennett. You gave him my middle name."

Claire turned her back to him, pressing her hands against the cool glass of the window, tears flowing freely down her cheeks.

"I didn't want him to grow up in your world, Vincent," Claire sobbed quietly. "I saw the armed men in your lobby in New York. I heard the late-night calls about cargo ships burning in Providence. I saw the cold, bloodless way you managed your empire. I couldn't bring an innocent baby into a life where every birthday party requires bulletproof glass and armed guards."

Vincent walked up behind her. He didn't touch her, but his presence was a warm, overwhelming wall at her back.

"You were right, Claire," Vincent whispered into the dark room.

Claire blinked, turning her head slightly to look at him. "What?"

"You were right," Vincent repeated, his voice heavy with a profound, bitter regret. "My world is poison. It destroyed my father. It killed my brother. And for thirty years, I thought it was the only thing I was built for."

He reached out, his hand hovering near her waist, his silver eyes filled with an absolute, unyielding sincerity.

"I built an empire so no one could ever threaten me," Vincent whispered. "And in doing so, I created a life so dangerous I couldn't even keep my own woman and child safe under my own name."

May you like

He looked toward the dark hallway leading to Leo’s bedroom.

"I am not going to take him from you, Claire," Vincent said softly. "I will not force you back to New York. I will not drag him into my darkness. But I swear on my mother's grave... I will never let another day pass where I am not his father."
