Chapter 10 - The New Morning

Late February brought the first soft thaws of early spring to the Hudson Valley.

The snow on the pine trees had melted into bright, glistening droplets, and the air held the sweet, wet scent of warming earth.

Inside the stone cottage in Garrison, the morning sun poured through the wide living room windows, illuminating a hand-crafted oak crib that sat near the fireplace—assembled perfectly, with every screw tightened and every panel aligned.

Eliza lay back on the soft cushions of the sofa, wrapped in a light cotton blanket.

Sitting beside her, holding a tiny, quiet bundle wrapped in a blue knitted blanket, was Damon.

His massive, calloused hands held the newborn baby boy with an exquisite, trembling gentleness—as if he were holding a vessel made of the finest, most fragile glass.

The baby had a thick tuft of dark hair and deep blue eyes that blinked up at his father with calm, innocent curiosity.

"He looks like you," Eliza whispered gently, reaching out to rest her hand over Damon’s knee.

"No," Damon said softly, a tear finally slipping down his cheek and falling onto his collar. "He looks like his brothers and sisters."

The front door opened quietly, and four sets of footsteps echoed down the hallway.

Wyatt, Delaney, Micah, and Phoebe stepped into the sunlit living room. They had spent the night at the local inn after Eliza went into labor, arriving the moment Frank called to tell them their baby brother had arrived safely.

Phoebe rushed over first, kneeling by the sofa with a breathless gasp. "Oh... he's so little!"

Damon carefully leaned down, lowering the baby so Phoebe could gently touch his tiny, soft fingers. The newborn's hand instantly curled around her pinky finger, holding on with surprising strength.

Delaney laughed softly, wiping a tear from her eye, while Micah clapped a warm, heavy hand over his father's shoulder.

Wyatt stood beside the couch, looking at his father with a quiet, profound smile. "What's his name, Dad?"

Damon looked up at his four eldest children—the four heirs who had walked away from a fortune, who had stood against an empire, who had taught him how to love without fear.

Then he looked at Eliza, whose eyes were filled with peace and complete forgiveness.

"His name," Damon said, his voice ringing rich, warm, and unbroken through the quiet cottage, "is Daniel Northcott. Named after the man who built this cottage... a man who knew that a home isn't held together by iron walls or legal contracts."

He held out the baby toward his children.

"Come hold your brother," Damon said softly.

One by one, all four heirs gathered around the sofa, holding the new life they had fought to protect, while the morning sun washed over the small stone house, warming a family that had finally found its foundation in the truth.
