Chapter 10 - THE SILVER STRAND

Two weeks later.
The afternoon sun shone brightly over the rolling green hills of the Russo estate in Long Island.
The stone walls had been repaired, the shattered windows replaced with bulletproof reinforced glass, and the gardens were blooming with fresh white roses.
On the back patio overlooking the ocean, a long wooden table was set for Sunday dinner.
Vittorio Russo sat at the head of the table, wearing a comfortable grey cardigan, holding a glass of red wine. He looked older, his face lined with the weight of the past eleven years, but his eyes were peaceful.
Beside him sat Margaret.
She wore a simple, elegant lavender dress. Her silver hair had been cut into a beautiful, stylish bob that framed her face perfectly, glowing in the warm afternoon sunlight.
Nico walked out onto the patio, carrying a tray of fresh espresso cups.
He set a cup down in front of his mother, looking down at her new hair with a warm, genuine smile.
"It suits you, Mom," Nico said gently.
Margaret looked up at her son, reaching out to stroke his cheek affectionately. "It feels light, Nico. For the first time in eleven years, I feel like I can breathe."
Vittorio looked up at his son, holding out his wine glass. "You handled the Commission well, Nico. You were stronger than I ever was."
"I learned from the best," Nico replied, taking a seat at the table beside them. "And from the worst."
"Carlo?" Margaret asked quietly, her smile fading slightly.
"Carlo is living comfortably on a private farm in Sicily," Nico said, looking out over the ocean. "Under twenty-four-hour guard. He'll never see New York again."
Vittorio nodded slowly, taking a sip of his wine. "It's more mercy than he deserved."
"He's family," Nico said simply. "And around here, we keep our promises to family."
Elena Vance walked out onto the patio, holding a small leather box. "Nico. The jeweler just dropped this off."
Nico took the leather box from Elena, opening the velvet lid.
Inside lay a silver pendant—a clear crystal glass casing holding a single, carefully preserved strand of silver hair.
Nico reached out, taking the necklace and handing it to his mother.
"You kept your promise for eleven years, Mom," Nico said softly, looking into her eyes. "Now this is my promise to you."
Margaret held the silver pendant against her chest, tears of happiness filling her eyes as she looked between her husband and her son.
"What promise is that, Nico?" she asked softly.
Nico leaned across the table, taking both of his parents' hands in his.
May you like
"That as long as I wear the Russo name," Nico said, his voice steady, strong, and absolute, "nobody in this world will ever make you hide again."
Outside the estate, the blue waters of the bay sparkled beneath the clear sky. The shadows of the past had finally burned away, leaving behind an empire that was no longer built on secrets and lies—but on the strength of a promise kept.
