Chapter 8 - The Crucible

Thursday morning arrived in a blaze of golden sunlight over Ashford Bay.

At 6:30 A.M., the surgical team led by Dr. Sterling rolled Wyatt’s bed down the private elevator toward the state-of-the-art operating theater on the fourth floor.

Quinn walked alongside the bed, holding her brother’s hand tightly until they reached the double doors of the surgical wing.

"I'll see you in a few hours, Wy," Quinn said, smiling through her tears as she leaned down to kiss his forehead. "I love you."

"Love you too, Quinn," Wyatt smiled bravely, though his eyes were wide with pre-op nervous anxiety. "Don't worry. I've got the Gravedigger on our side."

The doors closed, leaving Quinn standing alone in the quiet waiting area.

Lucas stood near the window, dressed in a sharp dark suit, flanked by Teddy Voss. Though his posture was composed, Quinn could see the subtle tension in his jaw. He was treating this operation with the same hyper-vigilant focus he applied to his highest-stakes corporate turf wars.

Two hours passed in agonizing silence.

Quinn paced the floor, her hands clasped tightly in her lap, counting every second on the wall clock.

Suddenly, Teddy’s phone buzzed sharply. He pulled it from his pocket, listened for three seconds, and his face instantly turned dark.

"Boss," Teddy whispered, walking over to Lucas. "We've got a problem downstairs."

Lucas didn't move his head. "Speak."

"It's Arthur Vance’s brother," Teddy reported in a low growl. "Victor Vance. He just pulled up to the main entrance with four armed heavy hitters from the Southside crew. He found out about Arthur signing over his assets yesterday, and he’s out of his mind. He’s heading up to the fourth floor right now."

Quinn gasped, her blood running cold. "What? They're coming here? Wyatt is in surgery right now!"

Lucas turned around slowly. His eyes were no longer those of the grateful man on the balcony—they were the eyes of the Gravedigger.

"Teddy," Lucas commanded quietly. "Lock down the surgical floor access doors. Keep Dr. Sterling’s team safe. Nobody steps through those doors."

"What about you, boss?" Teddy asked, pulling a sleek black handgun from his shoulder holster.

"I’m going to go have a conversation with Victor," Lucas said coldly.

He looked at Quinn, stepping closer to her. He reached out and gently rested his hand on her shoulder, grounding her panicked breathing.

"Stay inside the waiting room, Quinn," Lucas said, his voice smooth, reassuring, and completely devoid of fear. "Nothing is going to happen to your brother. I give you my word."

Before she could speak, Lucas turned and walked toward the double doors, his tall frame radiating a deadly, terrifying authority.
