Chapter 10 - The True Contract

Matteo blinked, genuinely surprised for the first time in his life. "Sofia... what are you doing?"
Sofia set the torn pieces of paper on the glass table, leaning forward, resting her small hands over his broad knuckles.
"My father forced me into a contract built on hate and fear," Sofia said, her voice clear, strong, and vibrating with absolute conviction. "And you tore that contract to pieces the night you protected me."
"You don't have to stay here out of gratitude, Sofia," Matteo warned gently, his fingers gently tightening around hers. "I didn't do any of this to trap you."
"I know," she smiled, a radiant, beautiful expression that lit up the entire room. "That's why I'm choosing to stay. For the first time in my life, Matteo... I am making my own choice."
She stood up from her chair, stepping around the glass table, and sat beside him on the rattan sofa. She didn't flinch. She didn't hesitate. She leaned her head softly against his broad shoulder, smelling the clean scent of rain and cedar that always followed him.
Matteo wrapped his large, warm arm around her shoulders, pulling her close against his side, feeling the steady, calm rhythm of her breathing.
"I don't know how to be a normal husband, Sofia," Matteo admitted quietly, staring out at the golden sunlight hitting the lake. "My world is dark, dangerous, and ugly."
"Then we'll bring our own light to it," Sofia whispered, reaching up to gently touch the faint scar along his jawline. "Together."
Out on the lawn, Julian kicked a soccer ball toward the golden retriever, his joyful shout echoing through the crisp autumn air.
Inside the sunroom, the mafia boss and his bride sat together in the warm sunlight—not bound by blood contracts, not chained by syndicate greed, but united by a quiet, unbreakable bond that had survived the dark and built a kingdom out of the ashes.
