Chapter 10 - A New Order

Six months later.
The grand ballroom at the Vale estate was bathed in warm golden light.
Flowers—white roses and soft eucalyptus, with not a single lily in sight—decorated the marble pillars. Over two hundred guests filled the room: high-ranking business leaders, local political figures, and city officials, all dressed in formal evening wear.
At the top of the grand marble staircase stood Claire Bennett.
She wore an elegant dark emerald green gown that draped beautifully over her full curves, her dark hair styled into a soft, glowing updo. On her right wrist, the old bruised skin was gone, replaced by a delicate diamond bracelet that sparkled under the chandeliers.
Beside her stood Mason Vale, looking formidable in a custom black tuxedo, his hand resting possessively and warm against the small of her back.
Dominic walked up the stairs, holding two glasses of vintage champagne. He handed one to Claire and one to Mason, smiling respectfully.
"The quarterly port reports came in from the east side," Dominic said smoothly. "Revenues are up thirty percent since Mrs. Bennett took over the logistics routing."
"I told you her precision was better than yours, Dominic," Mason said with a light chuckle.
"No argument here, Boss," Dominic laughed, raising his glass. "To the new order."
They clinked their glasses together.
As Dominic walked away to mingle with the guests, Claire stepped closer to Mason, leaning her shoulder against his broad chest.
"You look very pleased with yourself, Mr. Vale," Claire murmured, taking a sip of champagne.
"I have every reason to be," Mason replied softly, looking down at her with unadulterated devotion. "My empire is secure, my accounts are flawless, and the smartest woman in Chicago is standing by my side."
Claire looked out over the ballroom, taking in the quiet elegance, the armed guards discrete at the exits, and the atmosphere of absolute control.
Two years ago, she had walked into this mansion feeling small, invisible, and hidden behind baggy cardigans and endless spreadsheets. Tonight, she stood at the center of power, feared by enemies, respected by allies, and loved by the most powerful man in the city.
"You know," Claire whispered, tilting her head up to meet his dark eyes, "when you accused me of lying at two in the morning, I thought you were the most arrogant man I’d ever met."
Mason chuckled softly, his arm tightening around her waist, pulling her close against his side.
"And now?" Mason asked, his eyes gleaming with warmth.
May you like
"Now," Claire said, leaning up to kiss his cheek, "I think you were just slow to realize that the best thing that ever happened to your empire was already living under your roof."
Mason smiled, leaning down to press a soft kiss against her lips as the music echoed through the grand hall—a quiet celebration of a partnership built to last a lifetime.
