Chapter 10 - The Wedding Portrait

One year later.
The summer sun shone brilliantly across the grand courtyard of the Moretti estate. Flowers bloomed in vibrant shades of white, pink, and gold, and the cool ocean breeze from Lake Michigan carried the sweet melody of a string quartet playing soft classical music.
Over two hundred guests sat beneath the elegant white canopy in the grand garden.
At the front of the altar stood Luca Moretti, looking impossibly handsome in a tailored black tuxedo. Beside him, standing as his Best Man, was his twin brother Marco, wearing an identical suit, his face beaming with pride and joy.
The string quartet shifted into the traditional bridal march.
The entire crowd stood up.
I stepped onto the white carpet, holding a bouquet of white roses. My wedding dress was a stunning, hand-embroidered lace gown that flowed around me like water. My left shoulder was completely healed, skin smooth and unblemished, resting gracefully beneath the delicate lace sleeves.
Beside me, walking me down the aisle with a proud smile, was Daniel, who had become like a father to me over the past year.
I looked up toward the altar. Luca’s hazel eyes were locked on mine, filled with a love so deep, powerful, and profound that it brought happy tears to my eyes.
We exchanged our vows under the warm golden sun, pledging our lives, our hearts, and our futures to one another forever.
"I now pronounce you husband and wife," the minister declared joyfully. "You may kiss the bride!"
Luca swept me into his arms, dipping me gently as he kissed me deeply, surrounded by the roaring applause and cheers of our family and friends.
Later that evening, the grand reception moved inside the mansion's main dining room.
The chandeliers cast warm golden light across the polished mahogany floors and tables overflowing with fine wine, laughter, and celebration.
At the center of the room, above the marble fireplace, hung a massive gold frame.
It wasn't the fake engagement portrait Vanessa had bought.
It was the original, fully restored oil painting of Luca's parents on their wedding day—Helena Moretti in her white dress, smile radiant, holding her husband's hand.
And right beside it hung a brand-new portrait painted over the past six months: a portrait of Luca, Marco, and me standing together in the garden, smiling under the bright summer sun.
Luca walked up behind me, wrapping his strong arms around my waist, resting his chin softly on my shoulder as we looked up at the two paintings side by side.
"What are you thinking, Mrs. Moretti?" Luca whispered softly into my ear, his breath warm against my skin.
I leaned back against his chest, placing my hand over his, watching Marco across the room laughing and clinking champagne glasses with our guests.
"I'm thinking about that afternoon in the carriage house," I smiled softly, looking into my husband's beautiful hazel eyes. "I thought it was the worst day of my life... but it was actually the day my real life began."

Luca smiled, turning me in his arms and kissing me softly under the golden light of the fireplace.
"Welcome home, Claire," Luca whispered against my lips. "Forever."
