Chapter 4 - The Scent of Betrayal

The rain began to fall as the unmarked grey tactical transport vehicle pulled out of the estate’s hidden rear exit, cutting through the dense forest tracks that bypassed the main highways. Inside, the cabin was dimly lit by red tactical LEDs. Six heavily armed men sat in silence, checking their rifles, loading high-capacity magazines, and adjusting body armor.
Damon sat in the rear corner, Ruby fast asleep on the bench beside him, wrapped snugly in his thick trench coat. He had placed heavy tactical earmuffs over her ears to protect her from the loud engine growl and any potential gunfire that might soon erupt.
Marcus leaned across the narrow aisle, holding a tablet displaying a live satellite feed of the abandoned slaughterhouse on the city's eastern waterfront.
“The place has been dormant for five years,” Marcus explained, pointing to thermal imagery showing six heat signatures inside the main structure, with two more stationed on the roof. “It was owned by a shell company affiliated with the Moretti family. If Julian is there, he’s not alone. He’s made a deal with Marco Moretti.”
Damon stared at the thermal scan. Marco Moretti was an old dinosaur—a ruthless, desperate boss whose family had been pushed to the edge of extinction by Damon’s aggressive expansion over the past three years. Moretti had no code, no honor. Taking a woman and attempting to use a toddler as leverage was entirely within his character.
“Moretti wants the docks,” Damon analyzed quietly. “And Julian wants my seat. They set up the car bomb thinking I would take Ruby, panic, and try to flee the city using my primary vehicle. Once the car exploded, Moretti would claim it was a rival attack, Julian would step in to 'restore order,' and take over the Reyes Syndicate.”
“It’s a clean plan,” Marcus admitted. “Except for one thing.”
“They didn't account for a three-year-old walking into my meeting,” Damon said, his eyes narrowing.
He reached out and gently adjusted the trench coat over Ruby’s shoulders. The pink suitcase sat between his feet. He unzipped the main compartment fully for the first time, careful not to disturb the little girl. Inside were three small dresses, two pairs of socks, her favorite stuffed rabbit, and a small stack of handwritten papers tied with a blue ribbon.
Damon pulled out the papers. They were financial ledgers, handwritten in Elena’s precise script.
As he flipped through the pages, his pulse quickened. These were not household expenses. Elena’s late husband hadn't been an innocent victim; he had been the chief offshore accountant for the Moretti family. Before he was murdered, he had hidden the master keys to Moretti’s encrypted bank accounts in a secure server—and Elena had carried that secret with her into the Reyes mansion.
Julian hadn't just snatched Elena to leverage Damon. He had snatched her because he realized she held the key to destroying the Moretti family’s entire financial structure—or seizing it for himself.
“She wasn't just hiding from Moretti,” Damon muttered, a realization striking him like a physical blow. “She was waiting for the right moment to hand this to me. She was trying to buy her safety.”
“Boss, three minutes to the drop zone,” the driver called back from the front cabin.
Damon placed the ledgers back inside the pink suitcase, zipped it securely, and handed it to Marcus.
“If anything goes wrong,” Damon commanded, staring straight into his chief of security’s eyes, “your only job is to get Ruby out of the city. Take her to the safe house in Zurich. Use these ledgers to ensure she and her mother—if she survives—never have to run again.”
“Understood, boss,” Marcus said heavily. “And what about you?”

Damon reached down, checking the action on his custom rifle, chambering a round with a heavy, satisfying metallic clack.
“I’m going to remind Marco Moretti why he was afraid of my father,” Damon said. “And I’m going to show Julian what happens to traitors.”
