Chapter 5 - The Ledger

Dr. Calder choked, his legs dangling inches above the carpet as Dominic’s iron grip tightened around his neck and silk tie.
“Dominic... wait...” Calder gasped, his face turning a deep, dangerous purple. “Listen to me... it was... it wasn't my idea...”
Dominic didn't loosen his grip by a millimeter. He turned his head slightly toward Claire, who was leaning against the vanity, catching her breath, her wrist red from where Calder had seized her.
“Are you hurt?” Dominic asked her. The tone was chillingly calm, completely detached from the violent display of physical strength he was executing.
“I’m fine,” Claire breathed out, smoothing her hair back. “Lily is locked in the bathroom. She’s unhurt.”
Dominic nodded once. He turned his attention back to the gasping doctor hanging in his hand.
“You delivered my daughter, Henry,” Dominic said softly. “I gave you a million dollars to build your private surgical wing in Paramus. I sat at your dinner table with your wife.”
“Dominic... please...” Calder choked out, his eyes bulging.
“Where is the money coming from?” Dominic asked. “Not Vanessa’s father. Whitmore is broke—I know his balance sheets better than he does. That’s why he wanted the merger. Who paid you to buy the fake bracelet?”
Calder’s fingers clawed frantically at Dominic’s hand. “The... the ledger... in my car... Mercedes in the driveway...”
Dominic released his grip.
Dr. Calder collapsed to the floor in a heap, coughing violently and clutching his throat. Dominic didn't even look down at him. He stepped over the gasping physician and walked directly to the locked bathroom door.
He knocked softly twice. “Lily?”
A timid voice came from behind the thick oak door. “Daddy?”
“It’s safe, sweetheart. Open the door.”
The deadbolt clicked, and the door swung open slowly. Lily peeked out, her plush rabbit clutched tightly against her chest. When she saw her father, she burst into tears and ran forward, throwing her small arms around his waist.
Dominic immediately dropped to one knee, wrapping his arms around his daughter, burying his face in her dark curls. For three long seconds, the terrifying syndicate leader vanished, replaced entirely by a terrified father holding his child close.
“I’ve got you,” Dominic whispered into her hair. “I’ve got you, baby. Nobody is ever going to hurt you again.”
Claire watched the scene, feeling an unexpected lump form in her throat. In that brief moment, the blood, the shattered glass, and the cold luxury of the mansion faded away.
Dominic stood up, keeping one arm around Lily’s shoulders. He looked at Claire. “Take her down to my private office in the west wing. It’s a reinforced panic room. The code on the keypad is her birthday.”
“What about him?” Claire gestured toward Calder, who was crawling toward the broken display cabinet.
Dominic’s eyes flicked to Paulie, who had just stepped into the room holding a pair of heavy tactical zip-ties.
“Take the doctor down to the wine cellar,” Dominic ordered Paulie. “Don't let him die yet. Bring me the briefcase from his Mercedes.”
“Understood, Boss,” Paulie said, grabbing Calder by his lapels and dragging him roughly out into the hallway.
Dominic turned back to Claire. “Go with Lily. Stay inside the office until I come for you.”
Claire nodded, taking Lily’s hand. “Come on, sweetie. Let’s go see your dad’s big desk.”
As Claire led the child down the carpeted service staircase toward the west wing, she could hear the heavy commotion echoing from the main floor. The mansion felt less like a residential home now and more like a fortress under siege. Armed men stood at every intersection of the corridors, radios buzzing with encrypted chatter.
They reached the west wing. Dominic’s private office was tucked behind a massive set of double oak doors. Beside the frame sat an industrial digital keypad. Claire typed in the six digits corresponding to Lily’s birthday: 090418.
The heavy electronic lock disengaged with a deep pneumatic hiss, and the solid steel-core door swung open.
Inside, the office was lined with floor-to-ceiling leather-bound books, dark mahogany furniture, and high-definition security monitors displaying live camera feeds of the entire estate. A massive antique desk sat in the center of the room, covered in neat stacks of financial documents and leather folders.
Claire locked the heavy door behind them and led Lily to a large leather sofa in the corner. She turned on a small television mounted on the wall, setting it to a children's cartoon channel to distract the girl.
While Lily focused on the screen, Claire stepped over to the desk. Her eyes naturally scanned the open documents spread across the green blotter.
Among the construction contracts and shipping manifests sat a thick red folder labeled PROJECT OLYMPUS - FINANCIAL ASSETS.
Claire wasn't a spy, but three years in hospital administration had taught her how to read complex institutional paperwork. She glanced down at the top document.
It was an offshore asset transfer agreement dated three weeks ago. It detailed a systematic liquidation of Romano syndicate holdings—warehouses, real estate, trucking licenses—being sold off at a fraction of their value to a shell corporation registered in the Cayman Islands named Aegis Holdings.
At the bottom of the document sat two signatures.
The first was Dominic Romano’s legal signature.
The second signature belonged to the authorized managing director of Aegis Holdings:
Vanessa Whitmore.
Claire’s breath hitched. Vanessa wasn't just conspiring with Dr. Calder to kill Lily for the prenuptial default. She was actively bankrupting Dominic’s entire empire from the inside out before the wedding even took place.
Suddenly, the security monitors above the desk flickered.
Claire looked up.
Camera 4—showing the east wing sitting room where Vanessa was being held—showed two guards standing outside the door. But inside the room, Vanessa wasn't sitting quietly. She was standing by an open window, handing a small USB drive to a man wearing a black courier jacket standing in the courtyard below.
The courier slipped the drive into his pocket, mounted a dark motorcycle parked in the shadows of the hedges, and ignited the engine.

Claire’s eyes widened. The mansion gates were locked, but the perimeter fences in the rear gardens were low enough for an off-road motorcycle to clear.
Vanessa was leaking the syndicate’s master financial keys out of the house tonight.
