Chapter 9 - Justice in the Dark

The fourteenth floor of the Federal Building was completely deserted, the long carpeted corridors dimly illuminated by cleaning lights.

Martha and Damian walked side-by-side down the central hallway, their boots making no sound on the heavy carpet. Two Federal Marshals in tactical gear followed ten paces behind them, maintaining a discreet distance on the Deputy Attorney General’s explicit orders.

They reached the frosted glass doors reading: OFFICE OF THE SPECIAL AGENT IN CHARGE.

Martha didn't knock. She pushed the double doors open and stepped straight inside.

Harold Vance was standing behind a massive mahogany desk, frantically feeding reams of paper documents into an industrial shredder while two computer monitors on his desk executed deep-level drive wipes.

He snapped his head up, his hand instantly reaching toward his holstered sidearm.

“Don't even think about it, Harold,” Damian said smoothly, stepping into the office beside Martha, his hands resting casually in his coat pockets.

Vance froze, his eyes widening in total shock as he looked from Damian to Martha.

“What is the meaning of this?!” Vance demanded, trying to assemble his authoritative, official demeanor. “This is a federal office! You are trespassing on government property, Falcone! I can have you arrested instantly!”

“You could try, Agent Vance,” Martha said, her voice dropping into a razor-sharp tone that made the older man flinch. “Except Federal Marshals are currently securing every exit on this floor.”

Vance’s face paled, his eyes darting toward the hallway windows behind them.

“Martha...” Vance stammered, his posture deflating as his arrogant facade shattered. “Martha, listen to me. You don't understand what’s going on here. I was working a long-term undercover sting—”

“Shut up,” Martha said flatly, taking three slow, deliberate steps toward his desk.

She pulled the silver lighter from her pocket and placed it flat on the mahogany wood directly between his desktop monitors.

Vance stared down at the engraved initials A.B., his jaw trembling slightly.

“Andrew knew you were dirty three months before you killed him, Vance,” Martha said, her eyes burning into his soul. “He recorded your voice. He tracked your offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands. He knew you were selling out young women at the docks for blood money.”

“He was an idealist!” Vance suddenly spat, dropping his polite act entirely, his face contorting into ugly, desperate rage. “He was a low-level analyst who didn't understand how the real world works! That money was going to move through those ports whether I took a cut or not!”

“And my brother died because he refused to let you destroy human lives without a fight,” Martha said quietly.

She reached into her jacket and pulled out her smartphone, showing him the live transmission screen connected directly to the United States Attorney General's office.

“Every word you just said was broadcast directly to a federal grand jury,” Martha revealed with a cold, triumphant smile.

The heavy office doors behind them swung fully open, and four Federal Marshals marched into the room, their weapons unholstered.

“Harold Vance, you are under arrest for federal treason, conspiracy to commit murder, and obstruction of justice,” the lead Marshal announced, grabbing Vance’s arms and forcing them behind his back.

As the steel handcuffs clicked around Vance’s wrists, the disgraced agent looked up at Martha, his face pale and hollow.

“He’s still a mafia boss, Martha,” Vance hissed through his teeth, nodding toward Damian. “You’re making a deal with the devil!”

Martha looked at Damian, who stood tall and composed beside her, his hand resting calmly over his coat.

Then she looked back at Vance.

“My brother trusted him with his life,” Martha said clearly, her voice echoing through the office. “And tonight, he proved Andrew was right.”

Vance was marched out of the office in chains, his head hanging low as news camera crews—notified by Marcus—began flashing through the glass lobby below.
