Chapter 4 - The Shadow of Precinct 12

The next morning at 8:00 AM, Detective Derek Lawson stood inside the rain-slicked alley behind the Quincy Street apartment building in Dorchester. His heavy leather jacket was soaked, and his jaw was set in a tight, furious line.

Standing across from him was a younger officer, Officer Miller, who was nervously tapping his notebook.

"She’s gone, Derek," Miller said carefully. "The apartment is completely cleared out. Landlord said two big guys in suit pants packed her bags at two in the morning."

Derek slammed his fist against the brick wall of the alley, cracking the plaster. "She didn't just leave, Miller! She doesn't have the money to rent a closet in this city, let alone move in the middle of the night!"

Derek pulled a cigarette from his pocket, his hand shaking with rage. He was a broad, heavy-set man with cropped blonde hair, cold blue eyes, and a cruel mouth that was currently twisted in anger. For three years, he had owned Harper. He had controlled her finances, her friendships, her every breath. The thought that she was out there, beyond his grasp, made his blood boil.

"Who took her?" Derek growled, stepping into Miller’s personal space.

"I... I checked the traffic cameras from the corner," Miller stammered, taking a step back. "The SUV that picked her up belongs to a holding company registered in Delaware."

"What holding company?"

"Apex Global Investments," Miller whispered. "Derek... that’s a front company for Gabriel Ashford."

Derek froze. The cigarette halted halfway to his lips. "Ashford?"

"Yeah," Miller nodded nervously. "The vans that blocked your Explorer last night? They were registered to the same firm. Harper’s working for the Ashford syndicate, Derek. You need to drop this. If you go poking around Gabriel Ashford’s turf, the Captain won't protect you. The Captain works for Ashford."

Derek’s eyes narrowed into slit. "Harper doesn't know Ashford. She’s a pathetic, uneducated dropout who washes dishes. How the hell did she end up with the biggest mobster in New England?"

"I don't know," Miller said. "Maybe she was hired as staff. But whatever it is, she’s inside his perimeter now. You can't touch her."

Derek spat his cigarette onto the wet ground and crushed it with the heel of his boot. "Nobody takes what’s mine. I don't care if Gabriel Ashford is the King of England. She’s my wife."

"Ex-wife," Miller corrected quietly under his breath, though he made sure Derek didn't hear him.

"Get me the shift logs for Ashford’s Beacon Hill residence," Derek ordered, grabbing Miller by the collar. "Find out who supplies his domestic staff. If she’s working for him, she’s going to step outside that fortress eventually. And when she does, I’m going to bring her home."

Meanwhile, across town at the Beacon Hill mansion, Harper was standing in the ground-floor medical clinic—a high-tech, hidden room behind a sliding bookshelf in Gabriel’s study.

The room was equipped like an emergency surgical suite: surgical lights, stainless steel counters, heart monitors, shelves stocked with pharmaceutical-grade antibiotics, morphine, and trauma kits.

Gabriel stood by the window, watching as Harper systematically organized the surgical instruments, checking expiration dates on vials of lidocaine and IV fluids with practiced, efficiency.

"You move around a medical room like you never left," Gabriel observed, his hands tucked into his trousers pockets.

"I finished three years of nursing school at BU," Harper said, keeping her eyes down on the tray she was organizing. "I was two semesters away from my clinical rotation before... before I had to quit."

"Because Lawson made you quit," Gabriel stated, it wasn't a question.

Harper paused, her fingers gripping a pair of surgical scissors. "He didn't like me working night shifts at the hospital. He said nurses were untrustworthy. He wanted me at home."

"He wanted you isolated," Gabriel corrected smoothly. He walked over to the counter and looked down at the neatly organized tray. "Control always begins with isolation. Strip away the job, strip away the friends, strip away the financial independence. Until the victim believes the abuser is the only sun in their universe."

Harper looked up, surprised by the accuracy of his psychological assessment. "You sound like you've studied it."

"I study power," Gabriel said coldly. "And men who abuse women are weak men trying to play at power. Lawson uses his badge because without it, he is nothing but a cowardly bully with a gun."

Before Harper could respond, the heavy steel door of the clinic burst open.

Frank stepped into the room, holding his left arm tightly. Blood was pouring through his black suit jacket, dripping onto the pristine floor. Behind him was another guard, holding a submachine gun, his face covered in soot.

"Boss," Frank grunted, his face pale and slick with sweat. "Ambush at the Seaport depot. The O'Malley crew tried to hijack the shipment. I took a round to the shoulder."

Gabriel didn't flinch. He turned his dark eyes onto Harper.

"Your first test, Miss Queen," Gabriel said softly. "The bullet is still inside his deltoid. Extract it, clean the wound, and stitch him up. If he bleeds out, you lose your job."

Harper’s heart leaped into her throat. She looked at Frank’s bloody arm, then at the tray of instruments. Her hands began to shake violently. It had been three years since she had touched a medical instrument on a real patient.

"Harper," Gabriel’s voice cut through her sudden panic. He stepped closer, leaning down until his lips were inches from her ear. "Look at me."

She looked up into his dark, unwavering obsidian eyes.

"You are not Derek’s victim in this room," Gabriel whispered, his voice steady, grounding her like a steel anchor. "You are a medic. Save my man."

Harper took a deep, shaky breath. She closed her eyes for two seconds, letting the memories of her trauma fade behind the professional training she had burned into her mind years ago.

When she opened her eyes, her hands had stopped shaking.

"Get him on the table," Harper commanded sharp, her voice transformation complete. "Now!"
