Chapter 6 - The Confrontation

Brenda stepped into the foyer, her eyes immediately catching the navy-blue tie and pale green silk blouse discarded near the coat rack. Her gaze followed the trail of clothes past the staircase, into the living room, where her husband sat sobbing on an ottoman in his unbuttoned shirt, and where Sarah stood cowering by the cold hearth.

The silence that followed was heavy, suffocating, and absolute.

Brenda didn't scream. She didn't throw anything. The sheer absurdity and horror of the scene seemed to drain the breath directly from her lungs. She walked slowly into the center of the room, stopping three feet from Jeff.

"Emma waited until eight," Brenda said, her voice impossibly quiet, trembling with an agony that made even Jeff flinch. "She kept her party hat on, Jeff. She wouldn't let me blow out the candles because she insisted daddy was just stuck in traffic."

Jeff didn't look up. He kept his face buried in his palms, his shoulders heaving with ragged sobs. "Brenda... I'm sorry... I'm so sorry..."

"Don't you dare say her name," Brenda whispered, her hands curling into tight fists at her sides. She turned her head slowly, her eyes locking onto Sarah with a hatred so pure it seemed to scorch the air between them. "And you... you sat in my kitchen six months ago. You drank my wine. You held my daughter on your lap at the lake house."

Sarah looked down at the hardwood floor, unable to meet Brenda's gaze. "Brenda... I don't know what to say..."

"Then say nothing," I interrupted, stepping into the center of the room and standing beside Brenda.

I pulled two crisp white legal folders from my leather briefcase resting on the hall table and placed them on the glass coffee table between us.

"What are those?" Brenda asked, wiping a stray tear from her cheek.

"Those are two identical copies of a formal disclosure statement," I explained calmly. "Detailing thirty-four separate instances of corporate embezzlement, conflict of interest, and moral turpitude committed by Jeff Miller and Sarah Vance using hospital development funds over the past fourteen months."

Jeff's head snapped up, his eyes bulging in pure terror. "What?! That's a lie! I never stole anything!"

"You approved four hundred thousand dollars in unbudgeted medical equipment contracts to a medical supply company registered under Sarah's maiden name, Jeff," I said, picking up the top folder and flipping to tab three. "You thought because you used an offshore shell company in Delaware that the audit committee wouldn't trace the beneficial ownership back to this address. But as I mentioned... forensic accounting is my specialty."

Sarah turned deathly pale. "Mark... you... you wouldn't... that would ruin my career! I'd lose my medical license! I could go to prison!"

"You should have thought about your medical license before you turned my home into a brothel," I replied, my voice stone cold.
