Chapter 2 - The Audit of Shadows

The police cruisers outside turned the high, vaulted windows of the Vance estate into a rhythmic, flashing strobe of crimson and navy blue.

Federal agents in tactical vests swept through the thirty-room mansion like a tidal wave. Their heavy boots echoed against the polished hardwood floors as they secured every exit, bagged hard drives, and hauled steel filing cabinets out of Richard Vance’s private study.

Eleanor was hysterical, screaming at an agent who was currently tagging her gold-plated laptop with an evidence sticker. Brandon was on his knees, a paramedic holding a gauze pad against his forehead while a federal officer clamped heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists.

"You can't do this!" Brandon spat, wincing as the cuffs clicked tight. "Do you know who my father is?! Call our legal team! Richard, call Harrison!"

Richard didn't move a muscle. He stood by the fireplace, his arms folded loosely over his chest, watching the agents work with an eerie, detached fascination.

The lead investigator, Special Agent Sarah Miller, stepped into the master suite. She was a tall, sharp-eyed woman with silvering hair and a plain dark suit. She looked around the wrecked bathroom, noticed the shattered mirror, the trail of blood, and then turned her gaze to me.

"Mrs. Vance?" Miller asked quietly. "Or should I say, Ms. Sterling?"

At the sound of that name—Sterling—Richard Vance’s head snapped toward me for the first time. His calm, arrogant composure cracked just enough for his eyes to narrow into sharp needles.

"Sterling?" Eleanor gasped, pausing mid-screech. "What is she talking about? Her father was an unemployed high school teacher from Ohio!"

"Her father was Thomas Sterling," Agent Miller said dryly, opening a thick manila folder. "Founder of Sterling Federal Financial Group. And Ms. Sterling here has spent the last fourteen months operating as a confidential informant inside Vance Global Logistics."

Brandon looked up from the floor, his face covered in white gauze and red stains, his eyes wild with confusion. "Victoria... what is this? What lies are you telling them?!"

I stepped away from the paramedic who was trying to clean the cut on my temple. I took the plain grey towel from his hands, wiped the excess blood from my forehead, and looked directly down at my husband.

"Five years ago, Brandon, you approached me at the university library," I said, my voice cutting through the chaotic noise of the room. "You thought you picked an easy target—a quiet girl with no family presence in the city, someone you could use to present a wholesome image to your corporate board while you quietly drained my personal savings accounts to cover your gambling debts in Macao."

"That's a lie!" Brandon yelled.

"It's all on paper," I continued softly. "You stole four hundred thousand dollars from our joint account in 2023. You forged my signature on three separate loan applications. But you didn't stop there. You brought me into this house, and you let your father use my identity as the nominal director of four offshore shell entities—Aegis Holdings, Blue Sky Capital, Vance Marine Services, and Vanguard Alpha."

Richard Vance let out a soft, low chuckle.

"You're a bright girl, Victoria," Richard said, stepping forward until an agent placed a hand on his chest to halt him. "You always were quiet. I respected that. But you're missing the final page of the ledger."

Agent Miller gestured to her team. "Richard Vance, Brandon Vance, you are under arrest for federal wire fraud, grand larceny, conspiracy to commit money laundering, and racketeering. You have the right to remain silent..."

As the agents stepped forward to cuff Richard, the old man didn't resist. He held out his wrists smoothly, almost casually. As the steel snapped shut around his arms, he leaned closer to me, his voice barely above a whisper.

"You think you brought down Vance Global, Victoria?" Richard whispered, his dark eyes gleaming with malicious delight. "You spent five years studying my books. Did you ever bother to check who owned the parent entity that holds the debt on Sterling Federal?"

A sudden, cold shiver ran down the back of my neck.

"What are you talking about?" I demanded.

"Your father was a brilliant man, Victoria," Richard smiled, revealing yellowed teeth. "But he made one fatal mistake ten years ago during the credit liquidity crisis. He took a emergency bail-out loan from a private European consortium. A consortium named The Obsidian Group."

He leaned in even closer, his breath cold against my ear.

"Vance Global was never the mastermind, my dear. We were just the collectors. And now that you've triggered the collapse of Vance Global... the debt on Sterling Federal becomes instantly due in forty-eight hours."

May you like

Richard laughed aloud as the agents turned him around and began escorting him down the hallway.

"You didn't destroy my empire, Victoria," his voice echoed back from the grand staircase. "You just opened the door for them to take yours!"
