Chapter 7 - The Cornered Rat

For three days, the estate existed in a state of hyper-vigilance. Outside the heavy iron gates, news vans and reporters were parked along the coastal highway, eager for any detail regarding the mysterious heirs of the Sterling logistics empire. Inside, Alejandro spent every available hour with his sons, learning their individual personalities, their fears, and their quiet joys.
Mateo was the thinker—quiet, analytical, and fascinated by how things were built. Gabriel was the emotional heart of the group, highly sensitive and deeply attached to Elena. Leo was bold, energetic, and constantly exploring every corner of the vast house. And Lucas was the observer—the one who noticed every shift in tone, every opened door, and every strange face.
On the third evening, as the sun began to sink into the Pacific, casting deep purple and gold light across the estate grounds, Alejandro sat in his study with Mateo, his head of security.
“Richard’s financial positions are beginning to crumble, sir,” Mateo reported, holding a tablet displaying market data. “The moment Justice Vance’s temporary freeze took effect, the bank revoked Richard’s credit lines for his private real estate developments. He’s facing margin calls amounting to forty million dollars by Monday morning.”
“He’s desperate,” Alejandro noted, looking out the window at the fog creeping up the cliffs. “A desperate man with nothing left to lose is dangerous. Have you noticed any unusual activity around the perimeter?”
“Nothing direct,” Mateo said, frowning slightly. “But two hours ago, our cyber-security monitoring team detected a series of pings originating from an offshore server, attempting to access the estate’s automated gate systems. We blocked them instantly, but someone is probing for technical blind spots.”
Alejandro stood up, a dark instinct flaring in his gut. “Richard wouldn't try a technical breach unless he had someone on the inside who knew the system architecture. Who configured the gate overrides after Sofia died?”
Mateo’s eyes widened slightly as the realization hit him. “Arthur Vance’s firm managed the contractor security integration five years ago. They have the legacy system blueprints.”
Before Alejandro could speak, the desk phone rang—a direct, encrypted line that bypassed the primary switchboard. Alejandro picked it up immediately.
“Alejandro,” Justice Helena Vance’s voice came through the speaker, crisp and urgent. “The Geneva tribunal has finished the comparative analysis. The DNA match is absolute—99.998 percent direct paternity across all four boys. The formal court certification has just been uploaded to the probate register.”
Alejandro let out a breath he felt he had been holding for days. “Thank you, Helena. You have no idea what this means.”
“I am sending my clerk to hand-deliver the hard copies to your estate right now,” Helena continued. “Once you sign the final acknowledgment of paternity in the presence of the court courier, the legal shield is permanent. Richard’s standing is entirely extinguished.”
“Send them,” Alejandro said. “We will be waiting.”
Alejandro hung up the phone and looked at Mateo. “It’s over legally. Issue the security lock down for the entire perimeter. No one enters or leaves the property until the court courier arrives.”
“Understood, sir,” Mateo said, turning toward the door.
At that exact moment, the lights inside the study flickered violently, plunged into complete darkness for two seconds, and then snapped back on as the emergency generators roared to life in the basement.
Simultaneously, a high-pitched siren began to wail softly from the primary security console on Alejandro’s desk—a red indicator light flashing on the northern quadrant monitor.
Northern Gate Override Triggered.*
Manual Bypass Key Used.*
Alejandro’s blood ran cold. The northern gate—the abandoned access point near the condemned cottage where Elena had originally brought the boys onto the property.
“Mateo!” Alejandro shouted, pulling a dark automatic pistol from the hidden compartment beneath his desk. “The northern gate! Get the tactical team to the service wing now!”
Alejandro didn't wait for his security team. Fueled by a raw, primal instinct he had never felt before in his life, he sprinted out of the study, his leather shoes slamming against the hard floor as he raced toward the children’s living quarters.
He turned the corner into the grand hallway just in time to see a figure emerging from the service stairwell.
It was Richard Sterling. He was disheveled, his coat torn, his eyes bloodshot and wild with maniacal rage. In his right hand, he held a heavy steel crowbar; in his left, a set of master override keys stolen from the legal firm’s vault.
Behind him stood Arthur Vance, looking terrified, his face pale as chalk as he tried to grab Richard’s arm.
“Richard, stop!” Vance panicked, his voice cracked with terror. “This is madness! The court has already certified the results! If you do this, we are ruined!”
“Shut up, Arthur!” Richard roared, shoving the lawyer violently against the wood-paneled wall. “I built this company with my bare hands! I’m not losing forty million dollars and my life’s work to four bastard orphans!”

Richard turned his head and caught sight of Alejandro standing twenty feet down the corridor, holding a gun trained directly on his chest.
“It’s over, Richard,” Alejandro said, his voice dropping into a register of terrifying, deadly calm. “Drop the bar, or I end this right here.”
