Chapter 7 - The Cleansing

By ten o'clock that morning, the estate was dead silent once again.

A yellow county sheriff’s cruiser had escorted Richard Hayes away in handcuffs. Two black taxis had pulled out through the wrought-iron gates, carrying my mother and sister toward a cheap airport hotel in downtown Austin, their four allowed suitcases jammed into the trunks, their high-end credit cards cut into pieces on the dining table.

Marcus Vance’s security crew stood post at the outer gates, ensuring that neither Evelyn, Chloe, nor any of Hayes’s associates would ever step foot on the property again.

Inside the main house, the air felt different. The heavy, suffocating atmosphere of deceit, greed, and malice had vanished, replaced by the clean, quiet morning sunlight streaming through the tall windows.

I walked up the grand marble staircase toward the master suite.

Mariana was already inside.

She stood in the middle of the massive room, holding a dark plastic trash bag. With calm, deliberate efficiency, she was clearing away every trace of my sister’s presence—sweeping Chloe’s synthetic hair extensions, cheap designer perfumes, and empty champagne bottles directly into the bag.

I walked up behind her, gently taking the trash bag from her hands and setting it on the floor.

She turned to look at me. Her dark hazel eyes were clear, bright, and free of the agonizing weight she had carried for five months.

"You don't need to clean this room, Mariana," I said softly, taking her small hands in mine. "I'm hiring a professional restoration team to strip this entire master suite down to the drywall. New furniture, new paint, new floors. Every single inch of this house will be redesigned by you."

Mariana looked around the room, then back up at my face. A faint, soft smile touched her lips—a real, genuine smile that reached all the way to her soul.

"I don't need new furniture, Julian," she whispered, resting her head against my chest. "I just needed my husband back."

I wrapped my arms around her, holding her so tight against my body that I could feel the steady, calm rhythm of her heartbeat against my ribs.

"I'm never leaving again," I swore into her hair, pressing my lips against her temple. "I resigned from my road operations this morning, Mariana. Marcus is taking over the regional distribution travel. I'm running Vance Logistics from an office ten minutes from this house."

Mariana pulled back slightly, looking up at me in surprise. "Julian... your travel was your entire life."

May you like

"No," I said, cupping her face with both hands, my gray eyes filled with a deep, unshakeable truth. "Building a company was my work. You are my life. And I will spend the next fifty years making sure you never have to stand in the dark again."

Mariana closed her eyes, a tear of pure, overwhelming joy slipping down her cheek. She reached up, placing her hands over mine, pressing her lips to mine in a long, sweet, lingering kiss that tasted of freedom, rebirth, and unbroken love.
