Chapter 5 - The War Room

At the top floor of the Sterling Tower, the atmosphere was focused, quiet, and intensely efficient.
Mina stood before a vast glass wall overlooking the misty cityscape of Seattle. She was dressed in a sharp, ivory double-breasted suit, her hair tied back in an elegant ponytail, radiating the power of a woman who had fully reclaimed her throne. In her hand, she held a tablet displaying the real-time liquidation of Vance Tech’s remaining assets.
Arthur walked into the office, carrying two cups of fresh espresso. He handed one to his sister and leaned against the mahogany desk.
"Mark’s legal counsel tried to petition for a bail reduction this morning," Arthur said. "The judge took one look at the fraud evidence submitted by our team and denied the motion entirely. He’s staying in custody until trial."
"And Jessica?" Mina asked, taking a slow sip of the rich coffee.
"She was evicted from the penthouse at eight sharp. She spent two hours sitting on her suitcase outside the building trying to call every wealthy contact in her phone book. Unsurprisingly, every single one of them blocked her number. Last I heard, she was checking into a two-star motel near the airport using cash she scraped together from selling her designer watch."
Mina’s expression remained indifferent. "I have no desire to destroy Jessica out of spite, Arthur. But she needs to learn that actions have consequences. Ensure the civil suit against her for complicity in the embezzlement moves forward at standard speed. Let the justice system handle her."
"Understood," Arthur said. "Now, onto bigger matters. Father wants to discuss the public announcement. The Sterling Board wants you to formally take over as CEO of Sterling Innovation—our global tech division. The press is clamoring for a statement."
Mina turned around, looking at her brother. "I've spent four years hiding in the shadows, playing the quiet wife to a man who didn't appreciate me. I thought retreat was peace, Arthur. I thought if I diminished myself, I could live a normal life."
"You were trying to heal after Mom passed away," Arthur said softly, his tone softening. "We all knew why you ran away to that quiet life, Mina. You wanted to know if someone could love you without the weight of the Sterling name. You were grieving, and Mark took advantage of your vulnerability."
Mina nodded slowly, her eyes reflecting the grey sky outside. "He didn't just take advantage of it; he tried to erase me. He thought my silence was weakness. He thought my simplicity was lack of ambition." She set her coffee down on the desk with a firm clink. "Schedule the press conference for two p.m. in the main auditorium. It’s time to remind the world who I am."
Promptly at two o'clock, the press auditorium at the Sterling Tower was packed with over two hundred journalists, news anchors, and financial analysts from around the globe. Cameras flashed continuously, their bright lights filling the grand room.
When Mina walked onto the stage, the room erupted into a deafening roar of questions.
"Miss Sterling! Did you marry Mark Vance under a false identity?!" "Is it true Vance Tech was built entirely on your stolen code?!" "How do you respond to rumors that Mark Vance is facing twenty years in prison?!"
Mina stepped up to the podium. She didn't raise her hand, nor did she ask for quiet. She simply stood there, staring directly into the main television camera with absolute poise. Within five seconds, the authority radiating from her caused the entire room to fall into dead silence.
"Good afternoon," Mina began, her clear, crisp voice echoing through the microphones. "Four years ago, I took a step back from Sterling Enterprise to pursue a life away from public scrutiny. During that time, I allowed another individual to take credit for my work, my algorithms, and my vision."
She paused, looking directly into the lens.
"That error in judgment has been rectified. Effective immediately, Sterling Enterprise has reacquired all intellectual property associated with the Aegis Protocol. Vance Tech has ceased operations, and its remaining legitimate assets are being liquidated to reimburse the innocent employees and low-level contractors who were victimized by Mark Vance's greed."
A reporter from Forbes raised his hand frantically. "Miss Sterling! What is your response to Mark Vance’s claims that you intentionally set him up to fail?"
Mina offered a slight, razor-thin smile that sent a shiver down the spines of everyone watching.
"Mark Vance was given absolute freedom, infinite resources, and an unearned reputation," she said smoothly. "He had every tool necessary to succeed. Instead, he chose to embezzle, cheat, lie, and disrespect the very foundation of his life. I did not set him up to fail, gentleman. I simply stopped holding him up."
The auditorium broke out into frantic scribbling and snapping photos.
"As of today," Mina continued, her voice ringing with undeniable power, "I am stepping into the role of Chief Executive Officer of Sterling Innovation. We will be expanding our cyber-security operations globally, starting right here in Seattle. To those who believe they can build an empire on stolen ground: consider this your warning. The Sterling family does not negotiate, we do not surrender, and we never forget."
She stepped back from the podium, ignoring the explosion of shouted questions, and walked off the stage with flawless grace.
Watching the broadcast from a tiny, flickering television mounted on the wall of a dingy motel room, Jessica Thorne clutched a cold paper cup of instant coffee. Her hair was greasy, her eyes bloodshot, and her cheap clothes smelled faintly of damp wool.
As she watched Mina standing on that stage—radiant, powerful, revered by the world—Jessica squeezed the paper cup so hard the scalding liquid spilled over her knuckles.
"It's not fair..." Jessica whimpered to the empty, peeling walls of the room. "It's not fair... she had everything... she didn't need him..."
Her phone rang on the nightstand. She lunged for it, desperately hoping for a lifeline.
"Hello?!"
"Jessica Thorne?" a harsh, cold voice asked over the line.
"Yes! Yes, this is Jessica!"

"This is Process Server Davis. I am standing outside your motel room. I have three additional subpoenas for your court appearance regarding the federal tax evasion investigation against Vance Tech. Please open the door, or federal marshals will assist me."
Jessica let the phone fall from her hand. The knock on her door sounded like the strike of a gavel.
