Chapter 6 - The Paper Trail

By noon, the rain had begun to fall heavily over the estate. The sky turned a deep, bruised purple, matching the mark on my arm.
Inside the grand library, surrounded by floor-to-ceiling mahogany bookshelves, Clara sat at my late husband’s oak desk, flanked by two forensic accountants who had arrived from Boston.
Daniel and Vanessa were made to sit on two simple wooden chairs near the doorway, guarded by security. They were forbidden from touching their phones, which had been confiscated under a legal preservation order to prevent the deletion of digital evidence.
“Let’s review the ledger,” Clara said, opening a heavy blue file folder.
She looked up at Daniel, whose eyes were bloodshot and staring blankly at the rug.
“Over the past forty-eight months,” Clara began, reading from the certified forensic audit, “you and Vanessa transferred three point two million dollars from Aunt Eleanor’s personal healthcare trust into a shell corporation registered in Nevada under the name V&D Holdings.”
Vanessa looked away, crossing her arms tightly, her lips pressed into a thin line.
“You used one point one million of those funds to purchase a luxury yacht docked in Newport,” Clara continued calmly. “You used eight hundred thousand dollars to clear Vanessa’s pre-existing gambling debts at the Wynn Casino in Las Vegas. And you spent six hundred thousand dollars on private jet charters for vacations to Saint-Tropez, Aspen, and Miami.”
“It was an advance on my inheritance!” Daniel burst out, slamming his fist onto his knee. “I’m the only heir! It would have been mine anyway!”
“Inheritance is granted upon death, Daniel,” Clara said, her voice dropping into an icy, surgical precision. “Taking money from a living person’s account without their informed consent, while using forged medical evaluations to isolate them from legal counsel, is not an advance. It is grand larceny, elder abuse, and systematic fraud.”
One of the forensic accountants handed Clara a fresh printout from a portable wireless printer.
Clara scanned the page, a sharp, dangerous smile touching her lips.
“And it seems your bad luck is expanding,” Clara said, looking at Vanessa. “The Nevada Secretary of State’s office just flagged V&D Holdings for failure to report taxable revenue. They have forwarded the file to the Internal Revenue Service.”
Vanessa’s head snapped around. “What? No! That was a tax-exempt entity! Daniel said his accountant handled it!”
“Daniel’s accountant was disbarred six months ago for tax evasion in New York, Vanessa,” Clara replied. “Did he forget to mention that to you?”
Vanessa turned on Daniel with sudden, vicious fury. “You idiot! You told me everything was handled! You told me your mother was too stupid to notice!”
“Shut up, Vanessa!” Daniel yelled, his face turning dark purple with rage. “You’re the one who wanted the yacht! You’re the one who demanded we move into the master bedroom today!”
“I wanted a life!” Vanessa screamed back, jumping out of her chair. “I didn't marry a pathetic coward who lets his own cousin take his house!”

“Sit down!” the security officer commanded, stepping between them.
I stood by the library door, watching them turn on each other like starved animals trapped in a cage. Their love had been built on my money, sustained by my silence, and fueled by their shared greed. Without my wealth to grease the wheels of their relationship, there was nothing left between them but poison.
