Chapter 4 - The Birth in the Storm

By 8:30 AM, Suite 402 had been transformed from a crime scene into a high-security medical operating room.

Dr. Elena Rostova, a renowned chief of maternal-fetal medicine brought in directly by my brother from the University Hospital, stood over my bed, reviewing my chart with a team of four independent nurses who had been vetted by the state police. Two armed troopers stood guard right outside the surgical suite doors, ensuring no unauthorized personnel entered the floor.

"Her vitals are stable, but the contractions are coming every two minutes," Dr. Rostova reported, looking at the monitor tracing my baby’s heartbeat. "The stress of the morning has accelerated her labor. We need to perform the scheduled cesarean section immediately to ensure the baby doesn't suffer distress."

I reached out, grabbing Dr. Rostova’s arm. "Is my baby safe? Did he... did Flynn manage to give him anything?"

Dr. Rostova offered me a warm, reassuring smile, her gloved hand resting over mine. "We ran a full toxicology screen on your blood and the residual fluids in your room, Miss Vance. The tea contained a high dose of sedatives, but because you didn't drink it, your blood is completely clear. Your baby’s heart rate is strong. We are going to bring him into the world safely."

Twenty minutes later, I was wheeled into Operating Room 3.

The bright overhead lights cast a brilliant, clinical glow over the room. An epidural was administered, a blue sterile screen was raised across my chest, and Dr. Rostova began the procedure with calm, practiced efficiency.

Arthur stood beside my head, wearing sterile scrubs, holding my hand tightly as the rhythmic beep of the heart monitor filled the room.

"You're doing great, Mabel," Arthur whispered, wiping a bead of sweat from my forehead with a paper towel. "The D.A.’s office just executed a search warrant on Flynn’s downtown apartment. They found three million dollars in unauthorized wire transfers from Vance Commercial Properties' secondary accounts into an off-shore shell company registered under Selina’s name."

"So she was in on it from the beginning," I said quietly, the local anesthesia numbing my lower body while my mind remained crystal clear.

"She was the administrative manager for his private consulting firm," Arthur nodded. "They were planning to drain the remaining trust assets the moment your death certificate was signed and fly to a non-extradition country in South America."

"They won't be flying anywhere," I murmured.

Suddenly, the sharp sound of a baby’s cry cut through the clinical hum of the operating room.

It was a loud, powerful, vibrant cry that seemed to shatter every dark shadow that had hung over my life for the past twenty-four hours.

"It’s a boy!" Dr. Rostova announced, holding up a healthy, screaming infant covered in white vernix, his tiny fists waving angrily at the bright room lights. "Seven pounds, four ounces. Apgar score is nine point nine. Perfectly healthy."

Tears, hot and unstoppable, spilled down my cheeks as the nurse cleaned my son and laid him gently against my chest. He instantly stopped crying, his tiny, warm head resting against my neck, his small fingers instinctively curling around my index finger.

"What are you going to name him, Mabel?" Arthur asked, his voice thick with emotion as he looked down at his nephew.

I looked at the small, beautiful life resting on my heart—the child Flynn had wanted to steal and hand over to his mistress.

"His name is Leo," I whispered, pressing my lips against his soft, warm forehead. "Leo Vance. He carries my grandfather’s name. He will never carry a coward's."
