Chapter 7 - Counter-Intelligence

For twenty minutes, I spoke into the microphone.

I detailed the exact timeline—the overheard conversation in the kitchen, the crowbar, the fall, Patricia’s cold reaction, the blue receipt, and the silver key hidden beneath my nightstand.

When I finished, Vance clicked the recorder off and slid it back into his pocket.

"Captain," I whispered, leaning forward. "Victor will be back from his office at five o'clock. If he knows you were here without his permission, he will move me."

"He won't get the chance," Vance said standing up. "I am contacting the CID—Criminal Investigation Division—and the local district attorney's office. But we have a jurisdictional issue, Bennett."

"The domestic assault happened on private property," I realized quickly.

"Correct," Vance nodded. "Until a civil judge issues a warrant based on this recording, I cannot legally extract you from this house without risking the evidence being thrown out in court. It will take forty-eight hours to clear the paperwork through the state prosecutor."

Forty-eight hours.

Two more days in this room with Victor and Patricia.

"I can hold," I said, my jaw setting hard. "I've held for a week."

Vance looked at my legs beneath the blanket, then down at my arms, noticing the faint redness on my palms from my nightly pull-up routines.

"You're a tough soldier, Bennett," Vance said softly. "Keep your eyes open. Don't let them know I have the recording. On Thursday morning at 0800 hours, we execute the warrant."

He pulled a tiny, black plastic device from his pocket—no larger than a stick of gum—and dropped it onto my blanket.

"Panic button," Vance explained. "Direct cellular line to my personal phone. If they move toward you with intent to harm before Thursday, press it twice. My team will break down that front door in six minutes."

"Understood, sir."

Vance gave a sharp, formal military salute.

I raised my right hand, snapping a crisp, perfect salute back from my bed.

"Hang tight, Second Lieutenant," Vance said quietly.

He turned and left the room.

Ten minutes later, the front door slammed shut.

I slid the tiny panic button under my mattress, right next to the silver key from Vault 408.

Then I heard Patricia’s furious, trembling voice on the house phone down the hall.

"Victor? Get home right now. The military was here. She talked."
