Chapter 10 - The Sovereign’s Promise

Antonio stepped forward, holding the massive bouquet of white roses in his arm. He held them out to me, his dark eyes shining with an intensity that made my breath catch in my throat.

“Congratulations, Nurse Miller,” he said, his deep baritone dripping with warm, genuine pride.

I took the heavy bouquet, smelling the sweet, fresh fragrance of the blossoms. “You brought his mother all the way here? In public?”

“My mother insisted,” Antonio said, stepping closer and gently taking my gloved hand in his. “She told me that if I didn't bring her to see her daughter-in-law graduate, she would disown me.”

I froze, my eyes widening slightly at his words. “Her... daughter-in-law?”

Antonio smiled—that rare, devastatingly handsome smile that reserved itself solely for me.

He reached into his inner suit pocket, pulling out a small, velvet-lined mahogany box. He didn't drop to his knee on the wet grass; he stood tall, imposing, and completely unyielding, holding the box open between us.

Inside sat a breathtaking ring—a massive, flawless emerald-cut diamond flanked by two deep crimson rubies, set in intricate platinum filigree. It was a masterpiece of old-world craftsmanship, radiating power, elegance, and timeless grace.

“Antonio...” I whispered, my heart hammering against my ribs.

“A year ago, you sat beside a trembling old woman in a restaurant and offered her your kindness without asking for a single dime,” Antonio said softly, his voice rich with absolute conviction. “You walked into my dark, violent world and brought light into a house that had known only shadows. You healed my mother, and you healed my heart.”

He gently lifted the ring from its velvet casing, holding it between his long, strong fingers.

“I am a dangerous man, Sophie. My world will never be completely quiet. But I promise you this on my life, my honor, and the Russo name: I will build a fortress around your happiness. You will never know poverty again. You will never stand alone again. You will practice your medicine, save your lives, and reign beside me as the queen of my empire.”

He looked deep into my eyes, his dark gaze holding my entire soul.

“Will you marry me, Sophie?”

I looked at the stunning diamond ring, then up at the mob boss who had captured my heart—the man who ruled Brooklyn with an iron fist, yet knelt his heart entirely at my feet. I thought of the night at Bellarosa, the fear I had felt, and the incredible, unexpected journey that had brought me to this beautiful, sunlit garden.

I stepped into his arms, burying my face against his broad, warm chest, feeling his powerful heart beating steadily beneath his tailored suit.

“Yes, Antonio,” I whispered clearly, my voice ringing out with absolute certainty into the spring air. “Yes. A thousand times yes.”

Antonio let out a deep, triumphant breath, sliding the heavy diamond ring onto my finger. It fit perfectly, sparkling brilliantly beneath the afternoon sun. He cupped my face in his large, warm hands and brought his lips down onto mine, sealing our future in a deep, passionate kiss that echoed through the quiet garden.

Behind us, near the waiting convoy of black sedans, Maria sat in her rear seat, watching us through the open window with a quiet, joyful smile, while Paul and the bodyguards stood at strict attention, bowing their heads toward their new queen.

I had walked into Bellarosa as an invisible, struggling waitress carrying an unpaid debt to the world.

And I walked out as the sovereign heart of Brooklyn’s most powerful empire—protected, loved, and forever whole.
