Chapter 9 - The Eviction from Power

Grant Mercer stared at my name on the document as if it were written in fire.

He looked up at me, his eyes wild, his jaw working silently as he tried to process the total, absolute inversion of his universe. Three nights ago, he had held me by the throat, beaten me with his belt, forced me onto my knees, and stripped my ring off my finger, telling me I was nothing without him.

Now, I was standing over him in his own boardroom, holding his corporate life in the palm of my hand.

“Amelia... please...” Grant stammered, his arrogant, roaring voice suddenly collapsing into a pathetic, desperate whine. He took a staggering step toward me, his hands raised in a pleading gesture. “Amelia, baby... talk to me. We can fix this. It was a mistake! Vanessa meant nothing to me! She manipulated me! I was under immense stress with the merger... you know how hard I was working! We built this together, Amelia! You can't destroy our legacy over a domestic disagreement!”

The eight members of the board looked at Grant with absolute, disgust-filled revulsion. The powerful, invincible CEO they had worshipped had transformed into a groveling coward in less than sixty seconds.

I didn't step back. I looked at him with the cold, detached curiosity one might reserve for an insect crawling across a sidewalk.

“There is no 'our legacy,' Grant,” I said softly, my voice carrying cleanly across the silent boardroom. “You didn't build Mercer Dynamics. I structured your initial venture capital rounds. I drafted your proprietary patents. I negotiated your international supply chain contracts. I managed your debt covenants. You were merely the salesman who smiled for the cameras and spent the profits on expensive suits and young mistresses.”

“Amelia, please!” Grant dropped to his knees right there on the boardroom floor, clutching at the hem of my suit jacket, his eyes streaming with unrefined, pathetic tears. “Don't do this to me! Give me one chance! I’ll fire Vanessa! I’ll transfer all the Class B shares to your name! Just don't kick me out! Don't ruin me!”

I looked down at him, remembering the searing pain of the leather belt connecting with my back. I remembered standing on the cold concrete in my bare feet, listening to Vanessa laugh from the warmth of the foyer while Grant threw my wedding ring into the mud.

I pulled my jacket gently out of his grip.

“Marcus,” I said calmly.

Marcus stepped forward immediately, accompanied by two heavy-set security guards.

“Remove Mr. Mercer from the premises,” I commanded. “Revoke his executive security clearance, lock his digital access codes, and escort him out the front doors of the building.”

“No! Amelia! No!” Grant screamed as Marcus grabbed him by the arms, dragging him to his feet. Grant thrashed wildly, his expensive navy suit tearing at the shoulder seam as he was forced backward toward the boardroom doors. “You can't do this to me! I am Grant Mercer! I am the CEO!”

“You were the CEO, Grant,” I said, turning my back on him and facing the remaining board members. “Now, you are simply a criminal defendant facing federal wire fraud charges.”

The heavy frosted-glass doors slammed shut, cutting off Grant’s hysterical screaming as he was dragged down the hallway toward the freight elevator.

The room fell into a quiet, breathless calm.

I walked to the head of the mahogany boardroom table, taking my seat in the high-backed executive leather chair that Grant had occupied for eleven years.

Richard Hartwell walked over, standing proudly at my right hand. Sarah Jenkins sat to my left, spreading out the pre-packaged Chapter 11 restructuring documents.

I looked around the table at the remaining board members. They sat up straight, their hands folded, their faces filled with a profound, terrified respect.

“Ladies and gentlemen of the board,” I announced, my voice dropping into a razor-sharp, authoritative command structure. “Mercer Dynamics is entering an immediate, pre-packaged Chapter 11 debt-for-equity restructuring under the sole ownership of Hartwell Strategic Capital. All legacy executive contracts are hereby terminated without severance. The company’s name will be formally changed to Hartwell-Mercer Global Systems by 5:00 PM today.”

Director Harrison swallowed hard, leaning forward. “And... and our equity, Mrs. Mercer?”

“Your existing equity will be diluted by ninety-nine percent to satisfy senior debt obligations,” I stated coldly. “However, those of you who cooperate fully with our forensic accounting team over the next forty-eight hours to expose Grant Mercer’s hidden off-balance-sheet fraud will be granted newly issued management stock options in the restructured entity.”

Every single board member immediately opened their folders, reaching for their pens, eager to sign anything I put in front of them to save their own skins.

I looked out the floor-to-ceiling windows of the fiftieth floor, staring out over the glowing grid of Manhattan.

The storm was over. The reclamation was complete.
