Chapter 10 - The Sovereign Heart

Six months later.
The grand ballroom of the Biltmore Hotel in downtown Providence was filled with light, music, and the city’s most prominent figures.
Politicians, business leaders, police chiefs, and community organizers gathered for the inaugural gala of the Caldwell Medical Foundation—an event that had already raised five million dollars for underprivileged healthcare in Rhode Island.
At the center of the ballroom stood Nora Caldwell Vance-Mercer.
She wore a breathtaking royal blue silk gown that draped elegantly over her curves, her dark hair styled in sophisticated waves, a delicate diamond necklace sparkling at her throat.
Beside her, holding her hand with a calm, quiet pride, stood Silas.
He wore a dark tuxedo, his posture regal and imposing, but his eyes never strayed far from his wife’s radiant face.
Viktor, now fully recovered and wearing a sharp tuxedo that almost made him look like a diplomat, walked up to them holding a glass of sparkling water.
“An extraordinary turnout, Mrs. Mercer,” Viktor praised with a formal nod. “The Mayor just pledged another half-million to the pediatric ward.”
“Thank you, Viktor,” Nora smiled warmly. “And please, make sure Dr. Price gets a glass of good champagne. He’s been bragging to the hospital board all night about how he 'mentored' me.”
Silas let out a low laugh. “I can have Viktor throw him out of the window if he bothers you.”
“Silas,” Nora scolded softly, tapping his arm with her silk-gloved hand. “No threat of throwing doctors out of windows at my charity gala.”
“Yes, boss,” Silas replied dryly, a brilliant, handsome smile lighting up his dark features.
Viktor bowed his head and walked off to mingle with the city council members, leaving them alone near the grand balcony doors.
Silas took two steps back, pulling Nora with him into the quiet, starlit air of the private balcony overlooking the glittering lights of Providence.
The cool night air brushed against her skin, but wrapped in Silas’s warm embrace, Nora felt entirely safe.
Silas wrapped his long arms around her waist from behind, resting his chin gently on her shoulder as they looked out at the city below.
“Are you happy, Nora?” Silas asked softly into her ear.
Nora leaned her head back against his cheek, looking down at the glittering city lights, then down at the simple, elegant platinum band resting on her left ring finger.
She remembered the scared nurse who had stood behind the ER desk on a rain-soaked Tuesday night, terrified of the bleeding mob boss who had forced his way through her doors.
She had thought her life was defined by duty, exhaustion, and survival.
Now, held in the arms of the man who had torn down an underworld empire just to keep her safe, she knew her life was defined by something infinitely greater.
“I’m happier than I ever thought possible, Silas,” Nora whispered, turning her face to press a warm, tender kiss against his lips.
May you like
Silas held her tight against his heart, his blue eyes shining with the fierce, protective light of a sovereign ruler who had finally found his queen.
“Then the city is yours, my love,” Silas promised softly into the quiet night. “Forever.”
