Chapter 4 - The Clearing of the Court

The grand hall of the Moretti estate was illuminated by three massive crystal chandeliers, casting bright, unforgiving light across the polished white marble.

Sixty-two employees stood in rigid rows along the perimeter of the room. Near the double-height front entrance stood two uniformed Chicago police officers, looking visibly uncomfortable as they held their official notebooks.

Evelyn Cross stood near the center of the room. She had spent the last two hours trying to maintain her aristocratic composure, but her bleach-blonde hair was beginning to fray around her ears, and her cream blazer was rumpled at the elbows.

When the grand oak doors at the top of the gallery staircase opened, every head in the room swiveled upward.

Gabriel Moretti descended the stairs slowly.

He wasn't walking alone.

I walked beside him, resting my hand on the sleeve of his tailored charcoal suit jacket. My broken glasses were gone, replaced by my clear spare pair. The swelling on my cheek had been managed with ice, though the red bruise and the small butterfly bandage on my cut lip were still clearly visible under the bright lights.

A collective, audible gasp rippled through the sixty-two employees as they saw the billionaire owner of the estate escorting the house maid down his grand staircase like a guest of honor.

Evelyn’s face turned from pale to an ugly, mottled gray.

Gabriel stopped at the foot of the stairs, keeping me firmly beside him. He didn't raise his voice, but his tone carried into every corner of the vast stone hall.

"Officer Davis," Gabriel said, addressing the senior police officer near the door.

"Yes, Mr. Moretti?" the officer replied stepping forward.

"Have you been informed of the nature of the allegation made on my property today?"

"Ms. Cross informed dispatch that a domestic employee had stolen a high-value piece of jewelry and was refusing a search," Officer Davis said, checking his notes.

Gabriel gestured toward Marcus Reed, who stepped forward holding an encrypted tablet connected to the estate’s primary media system.

"Marcus," Gabriel said. "Show the officers."

Marcus pressed a button. Across the grand hall, a high-definition projector descended from the ceiling, casting a massive twenty-foot image onto the flat stone wall above the fireplace.

The security footage played in total silence.

Evelyn entering Mrs. Bellamy’s room. Evelyn slipping the three-carat platinum diamond cuff into her blazer. Evelyn walking to the basement, attempting to shove the bracelet into my locker, dropping it, and kicking it under the ice machine.

A terrifying, suffocating silence descended over the sixty-two employees.

Evelyn’s mouth opened, but no sound came out. She took two frantic steps backward, her high heels catching on the rug near the display table.

"That... that footage is altered!" Evelyn shrieked, her voice cracking into a high, hysterical register. "It’s a deepfake! He’s using his tech team to fabricate—"

"Quiet," Gabriel said.

The single word wasn't shouted, but it struck Evelyn like a physical blow. She froze, her breath coming in ragged, shallow gasps.

Gabriel stepped away from the stairs, taking three slow steps toward her.

"Evelyn Cross," Gabriel said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "For six years, you have been employed to manage the domestic staff of this estate. You were paid a salary of two hundred and twenty thousand dollars a year, provided with private lodging, and trusted with the security of my home."

He stopped three feet from her.

"Today, you committed felony grand larceny. You manufactured a false crime. You attempted to frame an innocent woman. And then you physically assaulted an employee of this house in front of thirty witnesses."

Evelyn looked frantically around the room, searching the faces of the staff members she had governed for six years.

Not a single person looked at her with sympathy. Carla, Maya, the junior footmen, the kitchen staff—every single person watched her with cold, unwavering satisfaction. The silence she had used to crush others had finally turned against her.

"Officer Davis," Gabriel continued, without taking his eyes off Evelyn. "Ms. Cross is terminated from her position immediately. I am pressing full charges for grand larceny, filing a false police report, and felony physical assault."

Officer Davis stepped forward, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his utility belt. "Ms. Cross, turn around and place your hands behind your back."

"You can't do this to me!" Evelyn screamed as the cold steel snapped around her manicured wrists. "Do you know who I am?! Do you know the people I know in this city?!"

"I know exactly who you are, Evelyn," Gabriel said softly as the officers pulled her toward the front entrance. "You are a criminal leaving my property in chains."

As the heavy oak doors closed behind Evelyn Cross and the two police officers, Gabriel turned back toward the sixty-two employees standing in the hall.

His dark eyes swept across their faces, lingering for a second on every person who had stood by and watched me get slapped two hours earlier.

"Listen to me carefully," Gabriel said, his voice echoing off the high ceiling. "Every person who works under this roof is under my protection. If anyone in this house ever touches an employee, threatens an employee, or attempts to humiliate someone because of their position, their background, or their appearance... you will not just lose your job. I will personally ensure you never work in this city again."

He looked at me, extending his hand once more.

"Sophie," Gabriel said softly. "Your shift is over. Let me take you home."
