Chapter 7 - The Cobra's Strike

By morning, the sanctuary of the estate was pierced by the brutal reality of the city outside.

Delaney sat at the long mahogany dining table, watching Nora happily eat chocolate-chip pancakes prepared by the private chef. Mrs. Alvarez sat beside her, sipping quiet coffee, still wide-eyed at the sheer luxury surrounding them.

Delaney hadn't slept a wink. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw the painting in Dante’s study—her own face looking back at her from a life she couldn't remember.

The heavy double doors of the dining room swung open. Dante walked in, flanked by Salvatore and Ethan, his chief legal strategist. Dante was dressed in a sharp black suit, his expression cold and businesslike.

"Salvatore," Dante ordered, his voice echoing in the grand room. "Take Mrs. Alvarez home in the armored sedan. Ensure two guards remain posted outside her apartment building twenty-four hours a day."

Mrs. Alvarez stood up nervously. "Thank you, Mr. Vance." She hugged Delaney tightly, whispering, "Be careful, Delaney. These men live in a different world."

"I know," Delaney whispered back, watching her old neighbor leave the room with Salvatore.

Dante walked over to the table, leaning down to kiss the top of Nora’s head. The little girl giggled, looking up at him. "Are you going to work, Prince Dante?"

"I have a meeting to attend, little one," Dante said smoothly, smoothing her dark hair. He looked up at Delaney, his gray eyes darkening. "We found Chad Whitmore."

Delaney’s hand tightened around her tea cup. "Where is he?"

"He tried to leave the state this morning," Ethan, the strategist, chimed in from the doorway. "He cleared out his wife’s personal savings accounts at First National Bank and bought a one-way ticket to Miami under a fake name."

Delaney turned her face toward Dante, anger flaring in her chest. "He abandoned Isabella while she was in the hospital, and now he's running away with her money?"

"He was running away," Dante corrected softly, a terrifyingly cold smile touching his lips. "He didn't make it to the airport. My men intercepted his vehicle on the expressway."

Delaney stood up from the table, her pulse racing. "What are you going to do to him?"

Dante looked at Nora, who was busy coloring a picture on a paper placemat, then looked back at Delaney. "I am going to remind him what happens to men who put their hands on Vance women."

"Dante, no!" Delaney pleaded, stepping closer to him, her voice hushed so Nora wouldn't hear. "If you kill him, you'll go to prison! Isabella is still his wife—she needs legal protection, not more blood!"

Dante reached out, his long fingers gently catching her chin, lifting her face so she had to look directly into his eyes.

"I don't go to prison, Delaney," Dante said flatly. "The judges in this city eat from my hand. Chad Whitmore committed aggravated assault, attempted manslaughter on his unborn child, and grand theft. He will sign over every asset he owns to Isabella, he will sign full divorce papers today, and then he will disappear into a federal penitentiary where my men control the wardens."

Delaney stared at him, stunned by the sheer, absolute scope of his power. He wasn't just a man with a gun; he was an institution that controlled the entire city from the shadows.

"And what about us?" Delaney asked, her voice barely a whisper. "What about Nora and me?"

Dante stepped closer, his thumb stroking her jawline. "You stay here. You are safe here."

Suddenly, Ethan’s phone buzzed sharply. He pulled it out, looked at the screen, and his face turned pale.

"Boss," Ethan said, his voice tense. "We have a problem."

Dante didn't take his eyes off Delaney. "Speak."

"The Moretti family just filed an emergency motion in family court," Ethan said nervously. "Dominic Moretti—Chad's uncle and the head of the Southside Syndicate—just put out a public statement across the city media."

Dante slowly turned his head toward Ethan, his gray eyes narrowing into slits. "What statement?"

Ethan swallowed hard. "Dominic claims that Isabella was carrying Chad's heir, and that you kidnapped Chad and Isabella to steal the Whitmore estate. Moretti has publicly demanded that Delaney Cole—the key witness—be handed over to the Southside Syndicate for questioning before the grand jury today."

The air in the room instantly turned to ice.

Dante walked slowly toward Ethan, his posture shifting into that of an apex predator preparing for war.

"Dominic Moretti wants my wife?" Dante asked, his voice dropping into a deadly, horrifying murmur.

"He doesn't know she's your wife, Boss," Ethan replied quickly. "The city only knows her as a poor waitress who intervened in an alley fight."

Dante turned back to Delaney, his eyes burning with an ancient, terrifying fire that illuminated the entire room.

"Then it's time," Dante said, his voice echoing off the marble walls like a death sentence. "It's time I remind all of Chicago who she belongs to."
