Chapter 6 - The Mask Slips

For three seconds, Dante didn't move a muscle.
Sonia held her breath, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. Did he understand? Will he make a scene? Will Vincent see us?
Then, something extraordinary happened.
In the span of a single heartbeat, the entire physical demeanor of the man sitting at table twelve transformed.
The slouched, beaten-down posture—the heavy, defeated hunch of a homeless drifter caught in a brutal rainstorm—vanished as if it had never existed. Dante’s shoulders snapped straight, squaring off with military precision. His spine stiffened against the leather of the booth.
His eyes, which had moments before appeared weary and exhausted, suddenly became as cold, sharp, and merciless as polished steel. A chilling, razor-sharp intelligence flashed behind his gaze—the look of an apex predator who had allowed himself to be cornered purely to watch how the hyenas would behave.
Sonia suddenly realized, with a shock that sent a cold shiver racing down her spine, that everything about this man had been a carefully constructed illusion.
The torn military jacket. The mud-caked boots. The unkempt, matted beard and exhausted expression. It wasn't poverty. It wasn't desperation.
It was a disguise.
Dante slowly lifted his head. He didn't look at Sonia anymore; his dark, piercing gaze shifted past her shoulder, locking directly onto the kitchen doorway across the room.
Standing in the doorway, Vincent Calabresi was still smiling, watching the table with an expression of smug, sadistic amusement, completely unaware that the trap he thought he had set had just been dismantled.
Dante didn't pick up his fork. He didn't touch the poisoned steak.
Instead, he slowly picked up his linen napkin, wiped his mouth with deliberate, unhurried grace, and tossed it onto the table. Then, with movements that were calm, measured, and terrifyingly controlled, Dante reached into the inner pocket of his soaked canvas jacket.
He didn't pull out a wallet this time.
He pulled out a sleek, titanium-cased satellite phone, tapped the screen once, and held it to his ear.
From across the room, Sonia watched him, her breath caught in her throat. She didn't know who Dante was, what he did, or why he was sitting in Lombardi’s Prime wearing a mud-soaked jacket.

But as she watched the cold, terrifying transformation in his eyes, one single thought echoed relentlessly in her mind:
Vincent has no idea who he just tried to poison.
