Chapter 8 - The Whispered Promise

The three FBI agents drew their service weapons instantly, pointing them directly at Julian’s head.

"Drop your grip, Vance!" the lead agent screamed. "Drop it now!"

The entire alcove went dead silent. The noise of the ballroom faded into a distant hum.

I stayed locked in Julian’s arms, my forehead pressed against his neck, feeling the absolute stillness of his body. He didn't flinch. He didn't blink. He held Kross’s wrist with crushing strength, staring down the barrels of three handguns without a single flicker of fear in his grey eyes.

"Kross," Julian said softly, his voice dropping into a register so quiet only the men in the alcove could hear it. "You think the federal government can protect you. You think a witness protection program in Idaho will save you from the ledger you stole."

"I have immunity, Julian!" Kross gasped, his face twisting in pain as Julian’s fingers dug into his wrist joint. "I turned over the drive! The grand jury is signing the indictments right now!"

"They signed Moretti’s indictment," Julian corrected smoothly. "Not mine."

Gabriel stepped out from behind the velvet curtain, holding a gold fountain pen and a sheet of paper stamped with the official seal of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York.

"Agent Miller," Gabriel said politely, handing the paper to the lead FBI officer. "This is a temporary restraining order and a supervisory immunity clearance signed forty minutes ago by Chief Judge Carter. Mr. Vance’s organization provided the primary decryption key for Thomas Kross’s drive two hours before you entered this building."

The lead agent stared at the paper. His jaw dropped. "What?"

"Thomas Kross didn't turn state’s evidence," Gabriel explained with a thin, sharp smile. "He tried to sell stolen federal records to Victor Moretti. Mr. Vance recovered those records and handed them to the United States Attorney at five o'clock this afternoon."

Kross’s eyes went wide with pure, absolute horror. He turned his head slowly to look at Julian. "You... you gave them the drive?"

"I gave them your drive, Thomas," Julian whispered, releasing Kross’s wrist with a dismissive flick of his fingers. Kross stumbled back, clutching his purple, bruised arm against his chest. "The drive that contains your private offshore accounts, your instructions to the hit squad at Vespers, and your signatures on Victor Moretti’s payroll."

"No..." Kross whimpered. "No, no, no..."

"Agent Miller," Julian said, taking a white linen handkerchief from his pocket and slowly wiping his fingers. "Arrest this man. He is the one who ordered the attack on West 4th Street."

The lead FBI agent didn't hesitate. He grabbed Kross by the back of his tactical vest, slammed him against the marble column, and snapped steel handcuffs around his wrists.

"Thomas Kross," the agent read flatly, "you are under arrest for attempted murder, extortion, and federal perjury."

As the agents dragged the screaming, struggling traitor away through the ballroom, the alcove finally went quiet again.

Gabriel bowed softly to Julian. "Victor Moretti has been taken into custody near the front valets, Mr. Vance. The state's case is secure."

"Good," Julian said. "Leave us."

Gabriel bowed again and pulled the velvet curtain shut, isolating the alcove from the rest of the hotel.

I stayed sitting on Julian’s lap.

My heart was beating so fast I felt dizzy. My arms were still wrapped around his neck, my emerald silk dress draped over his knees, my breath catching in my throat as the reality of what had just happened settled into my brain.

Julian had destroyed Moretti, caught his traitor, cleared his own name, and protected me—all in a single evening.

"You can let go now, Elena," Julian whispered softly against my ear.

I didn't move.

I couldn't move. My fingers were locked into the hair at the back of his neck, my knees pressed against his hip. I looked down into his face—into those slate-grey eyes that had terrified me for four days.

"You planned this," I gasped, my voice shaking. "From the moment you walked into my apartment... you knew Kross was the traitor. You knew he had the drive."

"I knew Kross was dirty," Julian said gently, his hand remaining resting securely against my waist. "I didn't know if I could trust the girl from Vespers."

"And now?" I whispered.

Julian reached up, his long fingers gently cupping the back of my neck, pulling me down until my forehead rested against his.

"Now," Julian murmured, his voice dropping into a low, deep promise that changed everything between us, "I promise you three things, Elena Voss."

"What?" I breathed.

"First," he said, his thumb softly brushing across my lower lip. "Your parents are completely safe. The guards in Columbus have been withdrawn."

"Second?"

"Vespers will be rebuilt. Better mahogany, better crystal, and your name will be on the deed as fifty-percent owner."

I blinked, tears filling my eyes again—not of terror, but of a strange, overwhelming relief. "And... and third?"

May you like

Julian looked up into my eyes, the cold glacier mask entirely gone, replaced by a dark, consuming fire that made my breath stop entirely.

"Third," Julian whispered, "you are never going back to Avenue B alone again."
