Chapter 6 - THE TRIAL IN THE MAHOGANY ROOM

By ten o'clock at night, the storm reached its peak. Heavy gales battered the estate, knocking out the main power lines completely. The mansion was now running entirely on internal diesel generators, casting a low, golden amber glow through the crystal sconces lining the corridors.

In the grand study, Eleanor Blackwood and Richard Sterling sat on heavy velvet armchairs in front of the crackling stone fireplace. Standing near the door were two of Marcus’s top security operatives, their arms crossed, blocking all exits.

The heavy oak doors swung open. Victor walked in, followed closely by Emma.

Eleanor looked up, adjusting her diamond necklace with an expression of deep irritation. "Victor! This farce has gone far enough. The guards refused to let Richard use the landline to call his legal firm. You are treading on extremely dangerous legal ground here."

Victor walked over to his black oak desk and sat down slowly. He didn't offer them drinks. He didn't ask them to be comfortable.

"Richard," Victor began, his voice flat. "How long have you been the legal counsel for the Blackwood family?"

Richard Sterling adjusted his spectacles, his expression cautious. "Thirty-five years, Victor. I served your father loyally until his death, and I have served you ever since."

"Loyally," Victor repeated, tasting the word like poison. "And tell me, Richard... when you helped my father and Eleanor hide my mother’s body twelve years ago, was that part of your legal retainer?"

The room went completely airless.

Richard Sterling’s hand froze mid-air. His eyes widened behind his gold-rimmed glasses, his jaw slackening slightly.

Eleanor stood up abruptly, her face pale with fury. "Victor! How dare you make such a repulsive accusation! You have lost your mind! You are unhinged!"

"Sit down, Eleanor," Victor said, not raising his voice, yet the authority in his tone was like a physical weight pressing against her shoulders.

Eleanor glared at him, but the presence of the two armed guards near the door forced her to sink back into her chair.

"Julian has confessed," Victor said, laying his hands flat on the blotter. "He saw you, Richard. He saw you and my father loading her body into Eleanor’s vehicle at three in the morning on October 14th, twelve years ago."

Richard Sterling swallowed hard, his skin turning a sickly shade of yellow under the firelight. "Julian... Julian is a unstable gambler, Victor. He’s drowning in debt! He would say anything to save himself from your wrath!"

"Julian is a coward," Emma spoke up, stepping forward into the firelight. "But he isn't a liar about that night. He was terrified because he knew what you did to Victoria."

Richard looked at Emma, his eyes narrowing with sudden recognition. "You... who are you?"

"I am the daughter of Clara Lawson," Emma said, her voice ringing clear and strong through the room. "Victoria’s sister. The woman whose house you burned to the ground six months after Victoria disappeared."

Eleanor gasped, her hand flying to her throat. "Clara’s daughter...?"

"You thought you destroyed every piece of evidence," Emma continued, pulling a small, yellowed notebook from her jacket pocket. "But my mother kept duplicate copies of the offshore bank transfers that Victoria uncovered. Transfers signed by you, Richard, and authorized by Eleanor."

Richard Sterling slumped back in his chair, his confidence completely collapsing. The legal mind that had orchestrated corporate takeovers for decades was entirely defenseless against the weight of his own past.

"It wasn't supposed to happen like that, Victor," Richard whispered, his voice trembling violently. "It was an accident..."

"An accident?" Victor asked, his eyes burning with dark rage.

"She found out about the offshore accounts!" Richard pleaded, clutching his hands together. "Your father was desperate! The shipping line was facing bankruptcy! If Victoria had gone to the federal prosecutors, we all would have gone to prison for fraud! Your father tried to grab the ledger from her hands... she fell back... her head struck the heavy hand-carved arm of that walnut chair..."

Victor’s heart hammered against his ribs like a sledgehammer. The image of his mother dying in that quiet, magnificent dining room hit him with physical force.

"And then you covered it up," Victor said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "You blew up the Victoria's Pride offshore to create a bodyless death, allowing you to claim the insurance payouts and secure the estate."

"It was your father’s idea!" Richard sobbed, pointing a trembling finger at Eleanor. "And her idea! They needed to clear the debt!"

"And the bug under the chair?" Emma asked softly. "Who placed that?"

Richard looked down at his shoes, unable to meet anyone's eyes. "I did," he confessed quietly. "Ten months ago. You started re-investigating the marine reports from the Victoria's Pride explosion, Victor. You brought specialized maritime salvage teams into the estate. I was terrified you were going to search the dining room with forensic equipment... I needed to know what you knew."

Victor slowly stood up from his desk. He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small, silver recorder that had been running throughout the entire conversation. He pressed the stop button with a crisp, final click.

"Marcus," Victor said.

"Yes, Mr. Blackwood?"

"The federal prosecutors and the state police tactical unit are waiting outside the main gates. Open the perimeter doors and let them in."

Eleanor stood up, her face distorted with panic. "Victor! You can't do this! The scandal will destroy the Blackwood name! The stocks will plummet to zero! Everything your father built will be wiped out!"

May you like

Victor looked at his stepmother with a coldness that chilled her to her core.

"My father built a kingdom on a grave, Eleanor," Victor said softly. "It’s time for it to burn."
