Chapter 10 - The Queen of Boston

One year later.
The Velvet Room had undergone a complete transformation.
Reopened under the name The Hayes Club, the subterranean establishment near Boston Harbor was now the premier jazz and cocktail lounge in the city. The dark, dingy interiors were replaced with warm mahogany, plush velvet seating, and crystal chandeliers that cast a golden glow across the polished floorboards.
At 11:00 p.m. on a brisk Friday night, the lounge was filled to capacity.
Penny Hayes—now Penny Vale—walked through the floor, wearing an elegant dark red velvet dress that accentuating her luscious curves. She moved with absolute authority, chatting with guests, checking drink orders, and laughing warmly with her staff.
She wasn't carrying trays anymore. She owned the building.
Behind the bar, Jimmy grinned as he mixed a signature cocktail. “Looking good, Boss. We’re on track for a record Friday revenue.”
“Keep the scotch moving, Jimmy,” Penny smiled. “And make sure table four gets their free birthday dessert.”
From the high balcony overlooking the main lounge, Matteo Vale stood leaning against the polished brass railing, a glass of mineral water in his hand. He wore a dark tailored suit, his dark eyes following Penny’s every move across the room with unadulterated pride and devotion.
Leo Mercer stepped up beside him, holding a clip board. “Port authority contracts are signed, Boss. The new shipping routes are official as of midnight.”
“Good,” Matteo said without taking his eyes off his wife.
Below them, a wealthy, intoxicated young patron in a grey suit accidentally bumped into Penny near the main aisle, spilling a drop of gin on her dress.
The patron began to snap his fingers aggressively. “Hey! Lady! Watch where you’re going!”
The entire lounge fell completely silent.
Every waiter, every bartender, and every regular customer stopped moving.
The young patron frowned, looking around at the sudden, terrifying silence that had descended over the room.
From the balcony, Matteo slowly set his glass down on the brass railing. He didn't look angry; he looked like a lion observing a particularly foolish sheep.
Penny didn't panic. She didn't shrink back. She smoothed down her red velvet dress, stepped right up to the patron, and tapped his chest firmly three times with her index finger.
“One,” Penny said calmly. “You don't snap your fingers in my lounge.”
“Two,” she continued, tapping him again. “You pay for your own dry cleaning.”
“And three,” she finished, leaning in close with a brilliant, dangerous smile, “if you don't apologize in the next five seconds, the man standing on that balcony is going to carry you out of here over his shoulder.”
The young patron turned his head, looked up at the balcony, and met the icy, dark glare of Matteo Vale.
The patron’s face turned bright white. He swallowed hard, dropped fifty dollars on the table, and sprinted out the front doors as fast as his polished shoes could carry him.
The lounge exploded into warm laughter and applause.
Penny looked up at the balcony, offering Matteo a playful, sultry wink.
Matteo shook his head, a rich, rare smile spreading across his face. He walked down the grand staircase, stepping through the crowd until he was standing directly in front of his wife.
He reached out, sliding his arm around her waist, pulling her flush against his body in front of the entire room.
“You’re getting remarkably bossy, Mrs. Vale,” Matteo murmured, his eyes glowing with fierce love.
“I learned from the best,” Penny whispered back, wrapping her arms around his neck. “Now, are you going to carry me away, or do I have to poke you again?”
May you like
Matteo leaned down, kissing her deeply as the crowd cheered around them.
“No poking required,” Matteo whispered against her lips. “You already have me forever.”
