Chapter 7 - The Return to the Penthouse

The twelve-million-dollar glass-and-steel penthouse sat atop the Meridian Tower in downtown Greenwich, offering panoramic views of the Long Island Sound.
At eleven o'clock that morning, the living room was in absolute chaos.
Vanessa stood near the floor-to-ceiling windows, her phone pressed to her ear, her face pale, her knuckles white as she screamed into the receiver at her lead corporate attorney.
"What do you mean we don't own the patents?!" she shrieked, her voice echoing off the double-height concrete ceilings. "I am the CEO! My name is on the building! My name is on the wall in the foyer!"
The attorney’s panicked voice crackled through the speaker: "Vanessa, listen to me! We just pulled the original master schedules from the Delaware state registry! The patents were never assigned to Vale Dynamics Inc.! They were leased under a temporary commercial license held by an entity called Prometheus! And the registered owner of Prometheus is Ethan Cole!"
"Cancel the license hold!" Vanessa screamed. "Pay him whatever he wants! Transfer five million... ten million from the operational reserve account!"
"We can't!" the lawyer shouted back. "The operational reserve account was frozen forty minutes ago by an administrative hold issued by the Board of Directors!"
Vanessa’s arm dropped to her side. The phone slipped from her fingers, crashing onto the plush Italian rug.
Behind her, Blake Mercer was frantically shoving designer suits, expensive watches, and leather travel bags into two large aluminum suitcases resting on the leather sofa.
Vanessa turned slowly, staring at him with hollow, disbelieving eyes.
"What are you doing, Blake?" she asked, her voice dropping into a eerie, terrifying whisper.
Blake didn't look up. His fingers were flying across the zippers of his luggage. "I’m getting my things, Vanessa."
"You're... you're packing?" Vanessa stepped toward him, grabbing his arm. "The factory line is down! The board has frozen our accounts! The lawyers are saying we don't own the patents! And you're packing your clothes?!"
Blake shoved her hand off his arm with violent force.
"Look at the news, Vanessa!" Blake yelled, pointing his shaking finger at the sixty-five-inch television screen mounted above the marble fireplace.
Vanessa turned her head to look at the screen.
The banner across the bottom of CNBC was glowing in bright, alarming crimson:
BREAKING NEWS: VALE DYNAMICS IPO SUSPENDED AMID ALLEGATIONS OF MASSIVE PATENT FRAUD AND OFFSHORE CAPITAL DIVERSION. SEC INITIATES PRELIMINARY INQUIRY.
"The IPO is dead!" Blake shouted, pulling his suitcase off the sofa and dropping it onto the floor with a heavy thud. "The company is a smoking crater! By two o'clock this afternoon, federal marshals are going to be sitting in our Midtown offices!"
"You did those transfers!" Vanessa screamed, lunging toward him, her nails digging into his lapels. "You told me those Cayman accounts were legal tax optimization structures! You made me sign those papers!"
Blake pushed her back hard, sending her stumbling against the edge of the glass coffee table.
"I gave you options, Vanessa!" Blake spat, his face contorted in pure, selfish disgust. "You signed them because you were obsessed with hitting a ten-billion-dollar valuation! You wanted to be on the cover of Forbes! You didn't care where the money came from as long as it bought you emerald dresses and public applause!"
"You liar!" she sobbed, tears finally breaking through her makeup, ruining the severe, pristine image she had maintained for three years. "You manipulated me! You seduced me!"
"Seduced you?" Blake let out a cruel, barking laugh. "You used me to push Ethan out because you thought he was an embarrassing mechanic who made your corporate image look cheap! You thought I was your ticket to the global elite! Well, congratulations, Vanessa. The ticket just expired."
Blake grabbed the handles of his two aluminum suitcases and turned toward the private elevator entrance at the rear of the foyer.
He pressed the call button frantically.
The silver elevator doors slid open with a soft, mechanical chime.

Blake took two steps forward—and froze dead in his tracks.
Standing inside the sleek, mirrored elevator cab, wearing a clean charcoal-gray wool coat, dark trousers, and polished leather boots, was Ethan Cole.
