Chapter 10 - The Horizon

Three days later.

The morning sun broke over the green hills surrounding Oak Ridge, filling the master bedroom of the safehouse with bright, warm light.

Emma sat in a plush armchair near the window, a clean bandage beneath her sweater on her right shoulder, holding her newborn daughter in her arms.

Cole Mercer sat on the footstool beside her, his eyes shining with tears as he gently held the baby’s tiny hand. They had named her Hope.

A soft knock sounded at the door, and Gabriel stepped inside, carrying a folder. He was dressed in a tailored navy suit, looking every bit the legitimate businessman he had fought so hard to become.

“Gabriel,” Emma smiled warmly, her face pale but full of life. “Come in.”

Gabriel walked over, looking down at the baby sleeping peacefully against Emma’s chest.

“The federal grand jury in Charlotte issued seventy-two indictments this morning,” Gabriel reported softly. “Julian Vance, Nolan Pike, and fourteen county officials were remanded without bail. Blackridge Industrial has been seized by federal receivers.”

Cole let out a long, shuddering sigh of relief, resting his forehead against Emma’s knee. “It’s really over.”

“It’s over,” Gabriel confirmed. He laid the folder on the side table. “Inside are three new passports, house deeds to a private coastal property in Maine, and a trust fund established for Hope. You leave on a private flight at noon.”

Emma looked up at Gabriel, tears brimming in her blue eyes. “How can we ever repay you? You saved my life... you saved my baby...”

Gabriel looked at the tiny child, remembering the dark, cold night at pump four, and the long road that had brought him out of his own shadowed past.

“You don't owe me anything, Emma,” Gabriel said softly, a genuine, rare warmth touching his dark eyes. “You gave me a chance to remember who I wanted to be.”

He reached out, brushing his thumb gently against the baby’s soft cheek.

May you like

“Live a good life,” Gabriel whispered. “All three of you.”

He turned and walked out of the room, stepping out onto the sunlit balcony overlooking the vast North Carolina pine forests, ready to meet the new day.
