Chapter 5 - The Voice from the Grave

The loft fell into an absolute, breathless silence.
Mia’s hand hovered over the trackpad, trembling so violently she couldn't press down.
Claire placed a comforting hand on Mia’s shoulder, giving her a gentle squeeze. You do it, Claire signed softly. It’s yours.
Mia clicked the folder open.
Inside was a single video file named: 04_12_FINAL.mp4.
The date stamp on the file was April 12th, 2022—exactly twelve days after Eleanor Holloway’s official date of death according to public records and police reports.
Mia clicked the video.
A media player opened, and the face of a woman filled the screen.
She was stunningly beautiful, with dark, expressive eyes, cheekbones almost identical to Mia’s, and long silver-streaked hair tied loosely in a braid. She was sitting in a dimly lit room with plain concrete walls, wearing a simple linen shirt. She looked tired, bruised around her left cheekbone, but her posture was fierce and unyielding.
When she began to move, no sound came from the laptop speakers.
She was signing.
Fluent, expressive, powerful American Sign Language.
Mia let out a strangled, sobbing gasp, her hands flying to her mouth. Tears instantly poured over her cheeks as she stared at the screen, seeing her mother’s hands move for the first time in four years.
Claire stood behind her, reading the signs on the screen with a growing sense of horror and awe.
“My darling Mia,” Eleanor signed on the video, her face brimming with maternal fierce love. “If you are watching this, it means I failed to get back to you. It means Graham’s promises were all lies.”
Eleanor paused on screen, taking a deep, shuddering breath before continuing.
“Your father is not just an ambitious man, Mia. He is a dangerous man. For years, I kept quiet while he built his empire. But when I realized he was hiding your deafness—when I realized he was forcing you to undergo painful, experimental nerve treatments at his private labs to preserve his 'image'—I knew I had to leave.”
Mark leaned forward, his face pale. "What is she saying, Claire?"
"She's saying Graham was using Mia," Claire whispered, her voice tight with rage. "He was running unapproved medical trials on her to develop neural-interface tech for his company."
On screen, Eleanor continued to sign, her hands moving with frantic precision.
“I gathered the evidence. The illegal trial records, the offshore accounts Victoria Vance used to bribe the FDA auditors, and the blueprinted patents Graham stole from his lead researchers. I hid them all on an encrypted server in the cloud. The access token is embedded in this file.”
Eleanor leaned closer to the camera, her eyes locking onto the lens as if she were looking directly into Mia’s soul.
“Graham did not cause a car crash to kill me, Mia. He staged it to erase me. I am currently being held at the Holloway Bio-Tech Research Facility in North Bend. They are keeping me alive to force me to sign over the rights to my family’s estate and my private patents. If I die, or if I refuse, they will make it permanent.”
The video flickered.
“Do not trust Victoria. Do not trust the police. Find someone who can read these hands, Mia. Find someone who sees you. I love you, my sweet light. Fight for your voice.”
The screen went black.
A tiny blue progress bar appeared at the bottom of the screen: EXTRACTION COMPLETE. 4.2 GIGABYTES OF DATA DOWNLOADED TO LOCAL DRIVE.
Mia sat frozen, staring at the black screen, her tears dripping onto the keyboard. Her mother wasn't dead.
Eleanor Holloway was alive, held in a secret facility forty miles outside Seattle.
Before anyone could speak, a blinding red light flashed through the loft windows.
A heavy, mechanical thud echoed from the alleyway below, followed by the shattering of glass.

Mark rushed to the window and looked down. His face drained of all color.
"Claire," Mark whispered, his voice trembling. "They found us. There are four black SUVs downstairs. And they have private security contractors with military gear."
