Chapter 4 - The Shadow Ally

Thirty-six hours before the wedding.
I knew that having audio recordings and photographed contracts was powerful, but against two multi-million-dollar corporate entities with legal teams on retainer, I needed an unstoppable ally—someone outside their web of bribery and intimidation.
At 2:00 PM on Thursday, while Ethan was at a pre-wedding bachelor golf outing organized by my father, I arranged a private meeting under the guise of an emergency braille banking consultation. I met with Senior Federal Prosecutor Julian Vance—the younger, estranged brother of my eye surgeon, Dr. Vance, and one of the most feared financial crime prosecutors in the state.
We met in a private room at the central public library. Julian Vance was a sharp, stern man in his late thirties with piercing grey eyes, wearing a dark steel-grey suit. He sat across from me, reviewing the tablet screen where I had transferred the audio files, the contract photos, and the medical records from Dr. Vance confirming my restored sight.
For twenty minutes, the only sound in the small room was the low playback of my mother’s voice screaming That happened three years ago! followed by my father’s cold admission of buying out the traffic camera footage.
Julian Vance slowly lowered the tablet, taking off his wire-rimmed glasses and rubbing the bridge of his nose. He looked at me with an expression of profound, quiet fury.
"Miss Bennett," Prosecutor Vance said, his voice deep and raspy. "In my twelve years with the Department of Justice, I have prosecuted human traffickers, cartel accountants, and corrupt politicians. But the absolute, calculated depravity of your family and Mr. Carter is exceptional."
"Will this evidence hold up in federal court?" I asked, sitting up straight, my voice completely free of the fragile, blind tone I used at home.
"The audio recording is admissible under state single-party consent laws because you were a direct participant in the conversation," Vance explained, tapping the screen. "The photographed financial contract between your father and Carter Global Logistics constitutes explicit evidence of extortion, evidence tampering, obstruction of justice, and conspiracy to conceal a felony hit-and-run."
He leaned forward, placing his elbows on the table, looking dead into my eyes.
"However," Vance continued, "if I issue arrest warrants today, their legal team will post bail within two hours. They will initiate an immediate corporate smear campaign, lock down their offshore accounts, and claim you orchestrated these recordings under mental distress due to your recent eye surgery. They will stall the trial for five years."
"I don't want them to stall," I said, my voice dropping into an icy register. "I want them ruined. Completely, publicly, and irreversibly."
A dark, dangerous smile touched the corner of Julian Vance’s mouth.
"Then we let the wedding proceed," Vance said smoothly. "On Saturday afternoon, the Bellevue Grand Ballroom will hold three hundred of the state's most prominent business leaders, politicians, news outlets, and high-society figures. They have invited national press to cover the 'Triumphant Wedding of the Blind Heiress and the Devoted Corporate Scion.'"
"What do you need me to do?" I asked.
Julian pulled a small, black USB flash drive from his coat pocket and slid it across the table to me.
"This flash drive contains an automated execution code," Vance said. "The Bellevue Ballroom uses a centralized digital AV system for their mega-screens during the ceremony stream. If you plug this drive into the main media server in the control room thirty minutes before you walk down the aisle, my federal team will gain remote access to override every projector, every speaker, and every live media broadcast in the building."

I reached out, my fingers wrapping around the cool metal of the USB drive.
"They built a three-year empire of lies on my darkness," I said softly, looking at Prosecutor Vance. "On Saturday, I'll turn on the lights."
