Chương 8 - The Crucible of Pain

Up on the ninth floor, the atmosphere inside Dante’s private training suite was thick with sweat, heat, and absolute, agonizing determination.

The bed had been pushed aside to make room for a set of low parallel bars brought in from a private medical facility in Houston.

Dante sat on the edge of a padded bench, wearing black athletic shorts and a sleeveless gray shirt that showed the thick, powerful muscles of his chest and shoulders. His chest was covered in a fine sheen of sweat, his breathing heavy and ragged.

Lena stood directly in front of him, holding a heavy leather stabilization harness wrapped around his waist.

Standing near the door were Marcus and two armed guards, their faces tight with anxiety as they watched their boss attempt what every doctor had called an impossibility.

"Again," Dante gritted out, his face pale, sweat dripping from his chin onto his chest.

"Mr. Vale, you've been working for four hours," Lena begged softly, her hands bracing his strong lower back. "Your muscles are shaking. If you tear a ligament—"

"I don't care," Dante spat, his gray eyes burning with an unholy flame. "Put your hands on my quad, Lena. Give me the pressure."

Lena sighed softly, stepping closer until her body was pressed against his knees. She reached down, placing both of her palms over his left thigh, leaning her full weight into the muscle.

Dante let out a low roar of pain and effort.

He grabbed the polished steel parallel bars with his massive hands. The veins in his forearms bulged like thick ropes as he pulled himself upward.

His knees trembled violently.

For seven years, his brain had sent signals down into an empty void. But now, with Lena’s hands providing the steady, intense tactile anchor his damaged sheath needed, the current connected.

His left leg extended. His heel struck the floorboards.

Clack.

The sound of his shoe hitting the floor echoed through the room like a gunshot.

Marcus gasped, taking a step forward, his eyes wide in disbelief. "Boss..."

Dante was standing.

He was leaning heavily on the bars, his long legs shaking under the sudden, terrifying weight of his six-foot-two frame, but his feet were planted flat on the ground.

He was standing on his own two feet.

He looked down at Lena, who was kneeling at his side, her hands still pressed firmly against his quad, her dark eyes looking up at him with pure, unadulterated triumph and tears streaming down her cheeks.

"Look at me, Lena," Dante rasped, his voice shaking with an emotion so powerful it threatened to break him.

Lena looked up into his face.

From this angle, standing above her for the first time since she had met him, he looked magnificent—a dark king reborn from the ashes of his own broken body.

"I see you, Mr. Vale," she whispered, smiling through her tears.

"Dante," he commanded softly, leaning down slightly despite the agony in his legs. "My name is Dante."

Before she could answer, his right hand reached out, cupping the side of her soft, warm face. His thumb gently wiped away a tear from her cheek.

The touch was soft, tender, and completely devoid of the violence that ruled the rest of his world.

For three seconds, neither of them breathed. The distance between their lips was less than four inches.

A heavy, electric tension filled the air between them—a realization that she was no longer just his attendant, and he was no longer just her employer.

The sharp chime of Lena’s phone on the nearby table shattered the moment.

Dante’s leg buckled slightly, and he lowered himself back down onto the bench, his eyes never leaving Lena’s face as she turned to answer the call.

Lena picked up her phone, seeing an unknown caller ID.

"Hello?" she said, trying to steady her breath.

"Hello, Lena," a cold, smooth voice came through the speaker.

Julianna Vance.

Lena’s posture immediately straightened, her body going cold. "Miss Vance."

Dante’s head snapped toward Lena, his gray eyes narrowing instantly.

"I’m sitting in the parking lot of the Gulf Regional Medical Center, Lena," Julianna said smoothly, the sound of wind rustling through the phone. "Your father is inside, hooked up to his machine. Such a fragile old man. It would be such a tragic shame if his power line were accidentally disconnected during his cycle."

Lena felt the room spin around her. Her hand clutched the edge of the table so hard her knuckles turned white.

"What... what do you want?" Lena whispered, her voice trembling.

Dante stood up from the bench—not using the bars, not using his hands—his anger propelling him eighteen inches off the seat before his legs gave out and Marcus caught him under the arms.

"Give me the phone!" Dante roared.

Lena held the phone to her ear, tears of terror bursting from her eyes.

"Listen to me very carefully, river-trash," Julianna whispered into the receiver. "You are going to pack your bags, walk out of the Black Pelican within fifteen minutes, and take the first bus out of Mississippi. If you tell Dante why you left... your father dies before sunset."

The line went dead.
