Chapter 9 - The Fall of Rossi

The peace that followed that night in the penthouse was short-lived, but it was swift and decisive.
Before the sun rose over Ridgewood the following morning, Victor Vance did not launch a bloody street war that would draw police sirens and civilian casualties. He didn't need to. Victor was a master of absolute, calculated destruction.
Using the financial intelligence and political leverage he had cultivated over two decades, Victor systematically dismantled the Rossi empire in less than six hours.
By 8:00 a.m., Dominic Rossi's bank accounts were frozen by federal regulators acting on anonymous, ironclad tax fraud documents delivered directly to the District Attorney's desk. By 10:00 a.m., the city health and safety commission shut down every warehouse, club, and shipping dock owned by the Rossi syndicate. And by noon, Dominic Rossi himself was sitting in a federal holding cell, stripped of his money, his men, and his power, facing thirty years without parole.
Victor didn't fire a single bullet. He simply erased his rival from the city as if he had never existed.
At 4:00 p.m., Victor walked into the Cornerstone Diner.
The diner was bustling with late-afternoon patrons. Patty was behind the counter, looking much calmer now that three armed guards in sharp suits were stationed discreetly at the front and back entrances of the property, securing the block against any lingering threats.
Scarlett was standing at table six, setting down a fresh slice of tomato pie for an elderly couple.
When she saw Victor walk through the door, wearing his dark charcoal suit, her face lit up with a smile that warmed the entire chrome-bordered room.
Victor walked over to her, stopping two feet away. He didn't look at the other customers. He looked only at her.
"It's done," Victor said quietly.
Scarlett set her tray down on an adjacent booth. "Dominic?"
"He's in a federal cell," Victor replied, a slight, victorious smile touching his lips. "He will never see the sky as a free man again. Your mother is safe. You are safe. The city is quiet."
Scarlett stepped closer to him, reaching out to straighten the silk tie that didn't need adjusting. "And what about you, Mr. Vance? Is your empire satisfied?"

Victor reached out, taking her hand in his and raising it to his lips, kissing her scraped knuckles with soft, absolute reverence.
"My empire is standing right here in front of me," Victor whispered.
