Chapter 6 - Seventy-Eight Floors Up

The elevator didn't feel like it was moving. There was no mechanical hum, no jerk of cables, only a subtle pressure in Elena's ears as the floor indicator numbers climbed rapidly past thirty, fifty, seventy.
When the doors slid open, she stepped out onto a carpet so thick her shoes made no sound at all.
The seventy-eighth floor was an open-plan executive suite surrounded by floor-to-ceiling glass that offered a panoramic view of Lake Michigan and the entire northern half of the city. Modern art pieces hung on dark oak walls. A single, massive desk carved from reclaimed walnut sat near the window, behind which stood a man in his early forty's.
He had Margaret's gray eyes, but everything else about him was built like an iron beam. His suit was dark charcoal, cut with mathematical precision, his dark hair touched with silver at the temples.
Standing beside him, looking intensely uncomfortable in a high-backed leather armchair, was an older man in a navy blazer.
It was Mr. Henderson—the owner of The Copper Spoon.
Elena stopped ten feet inside the door, her hands folded in front of her.
The man behind the desk didn't speak immediately. He stood with his hands shoved deep into his trousers pockets, looking at her through the clear glass reflection before turning around slowly.
"Miss Ruiz," he said. His voice was deep, resonant, and carried the effortless authority of a man who had never had to raise his voice to be heard in a room. "I am Arthur Vance."
"Mr. Vance," Elena said, bowing her head slightly.
"My mother tells me," Arthur said, stepping around his desk, "that you saved her life yesterday."
"I didn't save her life," Elena said directly. "She was cold, and her knees gave out. I gave her soup and walked her to the restroom."
Arthur stopped five feet away from her. He looked down at her with an intensity that made Elena want to step back, but she held her ground, looking straight into his grey eyes.
"My mother has severe aortic stenosis, Miss Ruiz," Arthur said quietly. "She went missing from her medical escort at four o'clock yesterday afternoon. By six o'clock, her blood pressure had dropped to eighty over forty. If she had fallen on that street, or if she had remained sitting in that cold draft for another thirty minutes without warm fluid, she would have gone into cardiac shock."
Elena blinked. She hadn't known. She had just seen an old woman who looked like her grandmother used to look when the winter came early.
"She told me what happened to your job," Arthur continued, gesturing toward the man sitting in the leather chair. "Do you recognize Mr. Henderson?"
Elena looked at the older man in the navy blazer. Mr. Henderson was sixty-two, owned five family restaurants across the city, and usually only visited The Copper Spoon once a month to audit the register receipts.
"Yes," Elena said. "Hello, Mr. Henderson."
Mr. Henderson looked like he was about to vomit. His face was gray, his hands were trembling on his knees, and he kept adjusting his collar as if it were suffocating him.
"Elena..." Mr. Henderson squeaked, his voice cracking. "I... I had no idea. Marcus didn't inform me of the incident until Mr. Vance's legal team called my house at two o'clock this morning."
"Mr. Henderson's company," Arthur Vance interjected smoothly, "holds a master commercial lease for three of his five restaurant locations in this city. All three leases are held by Vance Development Corporation—a subsidiary of this office."
Elena looked from Arthur to Mr. Henderson, the legal arithmetic slowly assembling itself in her mind.
"I called Mr. Henderson in this morning," Arthur said, "to inform him that his commercial lease at The Copper Spoon was being terminated effective midnight tonight due to severe breach of community safety standards and public health violations."
Mr. Henderson flinched as if he had been struck with a whip.
"Mr. Vance, please!" Mr. Henderson pleaded, his hands coming together in front of his chest. "Thirty people work at that location! If you terminate the lease, the restaurant closes down completely! I'll be ruined!"
May you like
Arthur Vance didn't even look at him. He kept his eyes fixed entirely on Elena.
"What do you think, Miss Ruiz?" Arthur asked her softly. "Should I close his restaurant?"
