Chapter 3 - The Ballroom Reckoning

The grand ballroom of the St. Regis was a symphony of cream roses, gold leaf, and high-society arrogance when Julian entered through the heavy brass double doors.
He did not walk with the easy, charming posture that the high-society press loved to cover in the style columns. He moved with a cold, terrifying purpose, his long coat trailing behind him, his dark eyes locked on the elevated head table where his father, Marcus Vance, was raising a crystal flute of vintage Dom Pérignon alongside Dr. Arthur Sterling.
"To the future!" Arthur was shouting into a microphone, his face flushed red with expensive bourbon. "To the union of Vance steel and Sterling medicine!"
The guests clapped, their laughter echoing through the cavernous room.
Chloe Sterling sat beside her mother, looking fragile and ethereal in a pale pink gown. Her pale skin was flawless—the skin that had been preserved by three blood transfusions and a marrow harvest extracted from my body when I was nine years old.
Julian stopped at the base of the head table.
"Julian, my boy!" Marcus Vance boomed, leaning over the floral centerpiece, his diamond cufflinks catching the light of the chandelier. "Where is your bride? The photographer is waiting for the cake cutting—"
Julian reached into his tuxedo jacket.
He didn't pull out a speech. He held the original surgical authorization page, framed by the dark blue folder, and slammed it down flat onto the white linen tablecloth, right into the middle of Arthur Sterling’s dessert plate.
The heavy impact overturned two wine glasses, sending deep red liquid pooling across the pristine cloth like blood.
Arthur’s smile froze instantly. His eyes dropped to the paper.
Marcus leaned forward, his brow furrowing in annoyance. "What is the meaning of this childish display, Julian? You have guests to host—"
"Read it," Julian whispered.
His voice wasn't loud, but it possessed a sharp, cutting clarity that caused the surrounding tables to fall instantly silent. The laughter near the orchestra died out.
"Julian, really," Eleanor Sterling sneered, adjusting her emerald necklace with a look of distaste. "If Genevieve is being dramatic about her childhood health issues again—"
"Read the signature, Father," Julian commanded, his eyes fixed entirely on Marcus.
Marcus picked up the paper with manicured fingers, intending to toss it aside. But as his eyes caught the faded ink at the bottom of the page—his own sweeping signature dated twelve years ago alongside the official seal of the Vance Trust—his hands began to shake.
The color drained from Marcus Vance’s face so rapidly that for a second, he looked like a corpse sitting in an expensive suit.
"Where... where did she get this?" Marcus choked out, his voice barely audible.
"She kept it," Julian said, taking a step closer to the head table, his jaw clenched so hard a muscle twitched beneath his skin. "She carried it on her body every single day while you forced her to smile for your charity galas. While you made her stand next to Chloe and pretend to be her loving sister."
Dr. Arthur Sterling stood up abruptly, his chair screeching against the floorboards. "This is private medical record material! It’s protected! Who authorized—"
"You harvested her," Julian said, his voice rising, cutting through the vast space of the ballroom like a blade.
The entire room went dead silent. Two hundred guests stopped mid-conversation. Servors stood frozen with silver trays in their hands.
"Julian, sit down!" Marcus barked, his authority slipping as sweat broke out across his forehead. "You don't understand the financial and legal agreements that were made before you were even out of college—"
"You harvested my wife," Julian repeated, stepping directly up to Arthur Sterling until they were inches apart. "You bought a human child, registered her as an orphan, and used her like an abattoir to keep your biological daughter alive. And my father paid for the equipment."
Chloe gasped, her pale hand flying to her throat as she stared at her father in terror. "Dad... what is he talking about?"
"Shut up, Chloe!" Arthur snapped, his polished facade dropping completely, revealing the cold, clinical surgeon beneath. He glared at Julian. "Genevieve would be dead in a state asylum if I hadn't taken her in! I provided her with luxury, education, and a home! She owed us her life!"
Julian didn't hit him. He did something far worse.
He turned to face the two hundred wealthy guests, high-court judges, city council members, and journalists sitting in the room.
He grabbed the microphone from the podium.
"The wedding is over," Julian announced, his voice reverberating through the heavy speakers in every corner of the St. Regis. "And by Monday morning, the Vance Family Trust will be liquidating every asset associated with Sterling Medical Research. If any of you ever speak to my wife again, I will personally see to it that your portfolios are destroyed."
May you like
He dropped the microphone. It hit the floor with a deafening screech of feedback that echoed through the stunned, silent room.
Without looking back at his father, who was now clutching his chest in shock, Julian turned on his heel and walked out of the ballroom.
