Chapter 7 - THE BREAKING POINT

The heavy steel pole struck Gareth’s jaw with a sickening, wet crack.

Gareth let out a muffled scream, stippling the wall with blood as he stumbled backward, dropping his pistol onto the linoleum floor. He hit the doorframe hard, clutching his ruined mouth, blood pouring between his fingers.

“Get her!” Gareth gurgled through shattered teeth, pointing wildly at me.

The two enforcers rushed into the small room.

The first guard grabbed me by the shoulders, shoving me violently against the wall. My head hit the plaster, bright white spots exploding in my vision. He raised his heavy tactical baton to strike me, but Elizabeth lunged forward, slamming a heavy glass bottle of medical disinfectant across the back of his neck.

The bottle shattered, sending liquid and glass everywhere. The guard groaned, collapsing to his knees.

In the chaos, I dropped to the floor, my fingers scrambling across the slick floorboards until they closed around the cold, heavy steel of Gareth’s fallen pistol.

I rolled onto my back, racking the slide with a sharp, metallic clack-clack, and pointed the barrel straight at the second guard’s chest.

“DON’T MOVE!” I screamed, my voice echoing off the concrete walls with a terrifying, absolute authority that froze the room in an instant.

The second guard stopped dead in his tracks, his hands rising slowly into the air.

Gareth, slumped against the wall, stared at me through swollen, bloodied eyes, his face pale with sudden, terrifying realization.

“Clara…” Gareth rasped, choking on his own blood. “You… you won't shoot. You’re a Linwood.”

“That’s why I will,” I whispered, my finger tightening against the trigger. “Get out. All of you. Get out before I put a bullet through your head.”

The cold, dead stillness in my eyes was something Gareth had never seen before. It wasn't the look of a frightened college student or a polite daughter. It was the look of a woman who had seen her family’s monstrous core and was ready to burn everything to the ground.

Gareth swallowed hard, taking a slow step backward into the hallway.

“Move!” I barked at the two guards.

The guards didn't hesitate. They dragged their bleeding companion up from the floor and backed out of the office into the main warehouse bay, hands raised, eyes locked on the black muzzle of my gun.

I followed them out, keeping the weapon raised, my back pressed against the office doorframe to protect Elizabeth and Hannah inside.

Standing in the center of the dark warehouse bay, illuminated by the bright high beams of the SUVs, stood two more figures.

My father, David Linwood, dressed in an immaculate cashmere overcoat.

And my mother, Eleanor Linwood, wearing her pearls and a black wool cloak.

They looked at me holding the gun, then down at Gareth bleeding on the floor, and finally at the small office door behind me, where the quiet, steady cries of the newborn baby echoed through the rafters.

Eleanor didn't look angry. She looked at me with a cold, disgusted pity.

“Put the gun down, Clara,” Eleanor said, her voice smooth, poised, and entirely devoid of emotion. “You look like a common criminal.”

“You hired men to break your daughter’s body,” I said, my voice cutting through the noise of the rain outside. “You turned her into an incubator for your greed. Who’s the criminal, Mom?”

David stepped forward, taking his hands out of his coat pockets.

“That child carries our DNA, Clara,” David said flatly, as if explaining an investment strategy. “It is biologically our daughter. Hannah was merely the carrier. Legally, ethically, and financially, that child belongs in the Linwood estate.”

“She’s a baby, Dad!” I roared, tears of fury finally spilling over my eyes. “She’s not a stock option! She’s not a trust fund loophole! She’s a human being!”

“She is eighty million dollars!” David yelled back, his composure finally snapping, his face contorting into a mask of raw, ugly avarice. “Eighty million dollars that your grandfather tried to steal from me and give to children who don't deserve it! I built this family! I built our name! And no ungrateful, pathetic daughter is going to ruin it!”

May you like

He raised his hand, signaling to the two armed security men standing near the vehicles.

“Take the baby,” David ordered coldly. “If Clara gets in the way… shoot her.”
